On July 31, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Head of the National Steering Committee for important national projects and key transport infrastructure projects, chaired a teleconference to review the Committee’s performance in the first six months of 2025 and summarize the high-intensity campaign, “500 nights and days of competition to complete 3,000 km of expressways.”

The meeting was virtually connected from the Government Headquarters to 26 centrally-run provinces and cities. Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha, Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc, Minister of Construction Tran Hong Minh, Minister of Home Affairs Pham Thi Thanh Tra, and leaders of ministries, sectors, and governmental agencies and localities also attended.

Reporting to the Prime Minister on the construction progress at the Long Thanh International Airport project, Mr. Nguyen Tien Viet, Deputy General Director of the Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV), said: “The two main traffic connections to Long Thanh Airport are Route 1 (T1) and Route 2 (T2)

Completion of the connection road four months ahead of schedule

Currently, Route T1 was opened to traffic on April 30, while Route T2 has been technically opened. Both routes are expected to be officially opened for technical use in August 2025.

In addition to Routes T1 and T2, which are invested in by the Project Management Unit of Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV), the two existing routes, Ton Duc Thang (25B) and Nguyen Ai Quoc (25C), passing through Nhon Trach district, are also being expedited by the People’s Committee of Dong Nai province. These routes are being widened and upgraded to synchronize infrastructure connections to Long Thanh Airport.

Road 25B has been completed with the final layer of asphalt, and traffic lights and signal lights have been installed. Route 25C is also being expedited and is expected to be handed over in August, four months ahead of the initial schedule for the end of 2025.

“In the first six months, the contractors mobilized approximately 13,000 engineers and workers, along with 3,000 construction equipment, to ensure progress and basic completion by the end of 2025, with commercial operation commencing in early 2026. Long Thanh is currently experiencing the rainy season, with frequent heavy rains, which has posed challenges to the construction process. To address this, the construction unit has deployed six high-capacity pumps to drain water promptly. As soon as the rain stops, construction resumes to ensure timely progress,” said Mr. Viet.

Regarding the terminal, the roofs of all three wings have been completed, and over 12,000 m² of glass walls have been installed. The installation of all glass walls is expected to be finished by the end of August. The central area of the terminal has completed the waterproofing layer on the first floor, and the remaining finishing items are being urgently constructed, expected to be completed in September 2025.

As for the passenger boarding bridge system, 12 out of 32 main pillars have been completed. The bridges are being assembled on-site, aiming to install 36 out of 64 bridges by December 31. The installation of the baggage conveyor system is also in progress, with approximately 50% of the conveyor supports completed and 30% installed.

Welcoming the first flight on December 19

“On December 19, coinciding with the inauguration of several major infrastructure projects nationwide, Long Thanh Airport will welcome its first flight from Hanoi to Long Thanh International Airport. The aircraft will taxi into the completed terminal through the passenger boarding bridge system, marking the completion of the project’s first phase,” said the Deputy General Director of ACV.

Vietnam Airports Corporation also proposed that Route 1, a traffic connection, currently lacks a connecting road from the expressway, affecting safety and urban aesthetics. Therefore, ACV requested that Dong Nai Province promptly complete the connecting road to ensure traffic safety and enhance the area’s landscape. Additionally, Dong Nai should promptly provide an additional 500,000 m³ of filling soil to facilitate runway construction and accelerate the progress of repairing Dong Nai Bridge and Tan Van Intersection to ensure the smooth flow of goods and human resources for airport construction.

“Overall, the construction of Long Thanh International Airport is progressing as per the Government and Prime Minister’s directions,” reported Mr. Nguyen Tien Viet.

Concluding the working session, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh instructed: To substantially complete the Long Thanh International Airport project in 2025, the Ministry of Finance should direct ACV and relevant agencies and units to comprehensively review the project’s progress, augment human resources and equipment, and organize construction in “3 shifts and 4 teams” to make up for lost time. They should also strictly control quality and labor safety and organize construction in a reasonable and scientific manner.

Currently, most of the north-south expressways and east-west expressways across the country have been formed or are under construction, expected to be completed in 2025 and 2026. To maximize the efficiency of these investments, facilitate people and businesses, and promote socio-economic development in the project areas, the Ministry of Construction and localities should review and ensure smooth connectivity between the expressways and economic centers, railway stations, seaports, and airports.
