The “Doing Business with Saskatchewan” forum, held in Hanoi on February 17, showcased the Canadian province’s numerous strengths and cooperative advantages, offering a wealth of opportunities for collaboration with Vietnam.
A RANGE OF COLLABORATIVE PROSPECTS
Speaking at the event, Saskatchewan’s Minister of Trade and Export Development, Warren Kaeding, highlighted the significant potential for deep cooperation between Vietnam and his province. He emphasized that their partnership could extend beyond agriculture and food exports to encompass energy, biotechnology, and sustainable development.
Minister Kaeding underscored the complementary strengths of Vietnam and Saskatchewan, particularly in agriculture, mining, renewable energy, and technology. He noted that Saskatchewan is a leading global producer of essential agricultural commodities, including wheat, corn, and soybeans. In 2024, the province’s exports to Asia totaled CAD10.1 billion, with Vietnam receiving CAD130.6 million worth of goods.

Saskatchewan also boasts rich mineral reserves, including potash and uranium, which are vital to the global fertilizer and nuclear energy industries. Mr. Kaeding asserted that these strengths provide a robust foundation for expanding cooperation between the province and Vietnam.
He added, “We recognize the mutual benefits that can be gained from collaboration. We have invested significant resources and time in this dynamic Asian region because we firmly believe in the win-win potential between Saskatchewan and countries like Vietnam. Vietnam has much to offer, and we are confident that our province can bring numerous advantages to the table.”
ENHANCING PARTNERSHIP, FOSTERING BILATERAL RELATIONS
Since 2015, Vietnam has been Canada’s largest trading partner within ASEAN, with bilateral trade reaching $7.24 billion in 2024. Canada’s foreign direct investment (FDI) in Vietnam that year amounted to $73.15 million, reflecting the strong economic ties between the two nations.
Given these impressive results, Canada is committed to expanding and deepening its engagement with Vietnam. Strengthening collaboration between Vietnam and Canadian provinces like Saskatchewan will create significant opportunities to boost trade and connectivity in the near future.
Canadian Ambassador to Vietnam, Shawn Steil, attributed the remarkable growth in trade between the two countries to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). He emphasized that expanding cooperation between Saskatchewan and Vietnam underscores Canada’s long-term commitment to the region and highlights the province’s role in advancing bilateral relations.

Ambassador Steil added, “Saskatchewan is committed to showcasing its strengths and capabilities, and we assure you that Canada and the province will always be reliable and proactive partners in our cooperation with Vietnam.”
Minister Warren Kaeding also highlighted Saskatchewan’s expertise in research and development, offering opportunities for knowledge-sharing and technology transfer to Vietnam. This not only enhances Vietnam’s research capabilities but also creates a platform for businesses from both countries to collaborate and grow in high-tech and innovative sectors.
“Saskatchewan is a hub of opportunity, innovation, and global partnership,” Minister Kaeding concluded. “We are eager to strengthen our ties with Vietnam and explore new avenues of collaboration in trade, investment, and sustainable development.”
