On August 9, 2025, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh inspected the progress of the 500kV Lao Cai – Vinh Yen power line project in Phu Tho Province, emphasizing the importance of its completion by August 19, 2025. What initially was a two-year project has been shortened to a remarkable six-month timeline by the Prime Minister since the groundbreaking ceremony in March.

The 500kV Lao Cai – Vinh Yen power line is a key national energy project of utmost importance to Vietnam’s energy security. The Vietnam Electricity (EVN) is the investor of this project, with the Management Board of Power Projects 1 as the representative investor managing and executing the project. With a total investment of over VND 7,410 billion, the project encompasses 468 pole foundations, 202 anchor points, and a total length of over 229 km.

Spanning across 31 communes in two provinces, Lao Cai and Phu Tho (previously involving four provinces: Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Phu Tho, and Vinh Phuc), the project boasts a length of over 139.6 km in Lao Cai and 89.84 km in Phu Tho.

Upon completion, the project will facilitate the integration of electricity from major energy centers in the Northwest region into the national transmission system, enhancing regional connectivity and ensuring energy security for the entire North.

As of the inspection date, all 468 pole foundations have been completed. Land handover for the route has reached 81%, with 196 out of 242 anchor points handed over. Steel pole installation has been accomplished at 306 out of 468 locations, with workers currently constructing the remaining 162 positions. Wire pulling has commenced at 22 out of 242 anchor points.

Utilizing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for efficient wire placement

During the groundbreaking ceremony on March 16, 2025, the Prime Minister emphasized the urgency of this project, comparing it to the similar 500kV Quang Trach – Pho Noi power line project, which was completed in six months, despite being twice as long.

EVN and its contractors have mobilized maximum resources, manpower, and equipment, adopting a “4-on-site” construction approach to expedite progress. Local authorities have committed to completing land handover by April 15, 2025, earlier than requested, to facilitate construction.

Beyond its technical significance, the project also considers social welfare and environmental protection. Local authorities have engaged militia, veterans, and police forces to support construction while promoting awareness among the populace. Priority is given to resettlement for affected households, cost-saving measures, and safe construction practices.

Mr. Le Van Du, Project Execution Engineer from the Management Board of Power Projects 1 (Vietnam Electricity), representing the investor, shared with Cong Thuong newspaper: “Following the Prime Minister’s directive, the Vietnam Electricity’s leadership has instructed the Management Board of Power Projects 1 and contractors to review the progress and continuously organize construction to ensure timely power transmission.”

A representative from Song Da 11 Northern Joint Stock Company revealed significant technical improvements, including utilizing large cranes to erect poles in accessible locations, creating temporary roads for equipment transportation to challenging areas, and notably, employing UAV technology for efficient wire placement, significantly reducing wire-pulling time.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Tho, Chief Consultant Supervisor of Package 4HH from Power Construction Consulting Joint Stock Company 1, shared a challenge they faced regarding a particularly hard rock formation at position 166. Due to the proximity to a residential area, the use of explosives was not feasible. To overcome this, they proposed increasing the number of rock-drilling machines to ensure timely progress.
