On August 10th, the Office of the Investigative Police Agency of Da Nang City Police decided to temporarily detain Vo Van Nhat Quang (age 26), Vo Nguyen Hoang Thong (age 27), Vo Van Tuong (age 27), Vo Hoang Viet Hung (age 34), and Vo Van Quang (age 22), all residing in Quang Tri Province, for investigating the acts of “Illegal intrusion into others’ computer, telecommunication, or electronic device networks” and “fraudulent appropriation of property.”

Two of the five detained suspects.

The group, led by Quang, impersonated a reputable Facebook account selling fruit in South Korea to befriend and message potential buyers, thus obtaining their phone numbers.

They then used these numbers to register for WhatsApp and tricked victims into providing their OTP codes, allowing them to take over Facebook accounts by using the “forgot password” function.

Once in control, they impersonated the account owners and sent deceptive messages to their contacts, employing sophisticated tactics to defraud them of money.

From December 2024 until their arrest, the group illegally accessed over 70 Facebook accounts, with an initially estimated loss of over 10 billion VND.

The investigation into this case is ongoing.
