The Vietnamese government has issued a communiqué, announcing the Prime Minister’s decision to pilot several special mechanisms and policies to boost the development of Ho Chi Minh City.

One of the key projects mentioned is the Long Thanh International Airport, for which the Prime Minister has instructed the Ministry of Construction to supervise and urge the investor to decisively resolve any outstanding issues. The goal is to ensure the project stays on track for its grand opening on December 19, 2025.

Notably, the government is expediting plans to connect Tan Son Nhat and Long Thanh airports via rail and subway systems by the third quarter of 2025. The People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City is tasked with coordinating efforts with the People’s Committee of Dong Nai Province, the Ministry of Construction, and other relevant ministries and agencies to propose specific plans to the Prime Minister.

In a related development, the Ministry of Construction has requested the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam to collaborate with airlines to thoroughly study and assess the impact of transferring all international flights from Tan Son Nhat to Long Thanh Airport. A formal report on the operational plan is expected by September.

By mid-2026, all international flights are projected to depart from and arrive at Long Thanh International Airport instead of Tan Son Nhat.

Upon completion, Long Thanh Airport will be able to accommodate 100 million passengers annually. Its remote location allows for 24/7 operations without night flight restrictions, while also minimizing noise and pollution concerns. The expansive land area provides room for future expansion, addressing the issue of overcrowding experienced at Tan Son Nhat Airport.

All expressway projects will be operational in sync with the opening of Long Thanh Airport

According to the Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV), Long Thanh Airport is approximately 40 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City’s center, significantly farther than the 8-10 kilometer distance to Tan Son Nhat Airport.

However, concurrent investments in transportation infrastructure are expected to reduce travel time to 40-45 minutes, which is comparable or even faster than traveling to Tan Son Nhat during peak hours.

The Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway will be expanded to 8-10 lanes, and the Belt Road 3 project is on track for completion. New expressways, such as Bien Hoa-Vung Tau, Dau Giay-Phan Thiet, and Ben Luc-Long Thanh, will provide additional access options.

All expressway projects are expected to be completed by the end of 2026, coinciding with the opening of Long Thanh Airport. Notably, the future Thu Thiem-Long Thanh light rail system is projected to reduce travel time from Ho Chi Minh City’s center to just 20-25 minutes.

Long Thanh Airport will also be more convenient for passengers from Dong Nai and parts of the Mekong Delta and South-Central Coast regions. They will no longer need to travel through Ho Chi Minh City, saving time and expenses.

Additionally, ACV highlights that concentrating all international flights at Long Thanh will provide Vietnam with an opportunity to significantly increase the number of international transit passengers.

This development will facilitate the establishment of direct flight routes to Europe, the Americas, Australia, and the Middle East, reducing reliance on transit hubs such as Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Hong Kong.

With the transition from Tan Son Nhat, ACV assures that passengers will notice significant improvements at Long Thanh Airport, including no more crowding at check-in counters, shorter waiting times, and enhanced amenities such as commercial areas, restaurants, premium lounges, high-speed Wi-Fi, children’s play areas, and overnight rooms for transit passengers.

The Long Thanh Airport project is being built on 5,000 hectares of land with an estimated investment of over USD 16 billion. Upon completion, it will be the largest airport in Vietnam.
