A quiet morning in Amsterdam’s harbor witnessed the graceful glide of the nearly 119-meter-long vessel named Breakthrough. With no roaring engines or oily fumes, it left behind only gentle ripples, an incredible sense of tranquility accompanying this 7,200-ton steel behemoth.

This is not your typical luxury yacht owned by the super-rich. It is Bill Gates’ declaration of green technology on the high seas.

A Heart Powered by Liquid Hydrogen

Constructed by Feadship, a leading Dutch yacht builder, and designed by RWD, Breakthrough is the world’s first megayacht equipped with a 3-megawatt liquid hydrogen fuel cell system. Hydrogen, stored at a frigid -253°C, powers two 3.2-megawatt Azipod motors, integrated with an ABB Onboard DC Grid for optimal energy management and distribution.

While docked, the yacht can operate solely on hydrogen for a week, powering all amenities – from the heated pool and smart air conditioning to the multimedia entertainment system – without burning a drop of diesel. In sensitive marine areas, Breakthrough can cruise at 10 knots with zero emissions.

Breakthrough’s power system can support over 30 luxury mansions simultaneously.

Power to Spare: Surpassing the Capacity of a Million-Dollar Mansion

To grasp the magnitude of this system’s power, consider Bill Gates’ Xanadu 2.0, a 6,100-square-foot mansion on the shores of Lake Washington. With seven bedrooms, twenty-four bathrooms, six kitchens, a library housing a $30.8 million Leonardo da Vinci manuscript, and an 18-meter pool with an underwater music system, Xanadu 2.0 consumes approximately 45 kilowatts of electricity.

In contrast, Breakthrough could simultaneously power over 30 Xanadu 2.0 mansions or about 2,500 average American households. This is all thanks to a smoke-free, noise-free, and emission-free hydrogen-based system.

More Than a Machine: A Lifestyle Statement

Of course, Breakthrough adheres to the standards of a billionaire’s superyacht. Its interior blends marble, eucalyptus wood, and rattan, exuding both luxury and a connection to nature. On board are a private library, a mini hospital, a basketball court, a gym, a spa, and a contraflow pool heated by the fuel system’s waste heat.

The exterior boasts expansive sunbathing lounges, al fresco dining areas, and a helicopter pad. Every corner is optimized for relaxation and serves as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of opulence and sustainability.

Charting a New Course: A Maritime Milestone

Integrating hydrogen fuel cells into a vessel of this scale presented not only technical challenges but also required legal framework adjustments and operational changes. Feadship, ABB, and energy experts collaborated for years to develop safe hydrogen storage, distribution, and management systems suitable for a megayacht.

In May 2025, Breakthrough became the first superyacht to be refueled with liquid hydrogen in Amsterdam’s harbor, a significant milestone paving the way for similar applications in ferries and commercial vessels.

From Smart Homes to Smart Ships: Bill Gates’ Vision

Bill Gates is a staunch advocate for clean energy. His Xanadu 2.0 is already one of the world’s most advanced smart homes, with systems that adjust lighting, temperature, and even wall art to the preferences of its guests. Breakthrough embodies this philosophy in a mobile form – a convergence of technology, luxury, and sustainability.

Breakthrough embodies Bill Gates’ vision of green technology shaping the future.

Interestingly, despite bearing his name, it is rumored that Bill Gates has never set foot on the yacht. Nonetheless, Breakthrough stands as a testament to his conviction that green technology will shape the future.

Breakthroughs for the Oceans: Luxury with a Purpose

Amid global pressure on the maritime industry to reduce emissions, Breakthrough is more than a billionaire’s plaything. It serves as a prototype and a floating laboratory for hydrogen technology, proving that even the most traditional industries can embrace sustainability with the right commitment and investment.

From the shores of Lake Washington to the high seas, Bill Gates has left his mark: one a stationary super-smart home, the other a smoke-free vessel riding the waves. Both showcase what can be achieved when technology and vision converge, pushing the boundaries of luxury and sustainability to new horizons.
