“The King of Pepper” Phuc Sinh Dethroned: State-Owned Enterprise Snags Top Spot in Vietnam’s Billion-Dollar Export Market

According to preliminary statistics from the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), in the first 17 days of August 2025, Vietnam exported 10,830 tons of various peppercorns, achieving an export turnover of $71.8 million.

Compared to the same period in July 2025, export volume decreased by 0.2%, while turnover increased by 2.1%.

The total turnover of pepper exports from the beginning of the year to August 15, 2025, has reached $1.06 billion. The average export price of peppercorns in the first seven months of 2025 is estimated at $6,823.2/ton, a 46.9% increase compared to the same period in 2024.

Simexco Dak Lak, a company usually ranked in the top 6, has surprisingly risen to become the leading exporter during this period, with 1,076 tons, accounting for nearly 10% of the market share.

Following Simexco Dak Lak are Olam Vietnam (1,002 tons), Nedspice Vietnam (833 tons), Haprosimex JSC (803 tons), and Phuc Sinh (611 tons).

Simexco Dak Lak, or Dak Lak Import-Export Company Limited (Simexco), is a state-owned enterprise wholly owned by the Dak Lak Provincial Party Committee, with a charter capital of over VND 315 billion.

Established in 1993, Simexco is headquartered in Buon Ma Thuot City. According to its website, the company is among the top three exporters of coffee beans in Vietnam and one of the largest pepper exporters. They also deal in retail products such as ground coffee and instant coffee. Their products are currently exported to more than 60 countries and territories worldwide.

In addition to its core business, the company has diversified into restaurants, hotels, eco-tourism, and travel services, including the Biet Dien Hotel and Buon Don Green Tourism Center.

Simexco Dak Lak operates three factories: Buon Me Thuot (with an area of 5,000 square meters and a capacity of 100 MTS/day), Binh Duong (20,000 square meters and 200 MTS/day), and Hoa Phu (25,000 square meters and 200 MTS/day). In Dak Lak alone, the company has established a direct purchasing network, partnering with over 40,000 farming households cultivating coffee on approximately 50,000 hectares.

In terms of financial performance, for the 2024 fiscal year (October 1, 2023 – September 30, 2024), Simexco Dak Lak recorded a revenue of VND 9,401 billion, a 38% increase compared to the previous year, and a profit after tax of over VND 85 billion, a 24% year-on-year increase.
