The purpose of the 2026 National Economic Census is to collect data on production and business units to assess the country’s socio-economic development status and trends. This information will inform the evaluation, planning, and policy-making process for Vietnam’s economic and social development.
The census will cover a diverse range of entities, including corporations, enterprises, cooperatives, associations, business households, non-public service units, and branches of domestic and foreign enterprises operating in Vietnam. Religious and faith-based organizations will also be included in the scope of the survey.
The survey will focus on collecting five main groups of information: (1) Identification details, industry, and economic type; (2) Labor, assets, and capital of the surveyed units; (3) Products, revenue, and business expenses; (4) Adoption of modern technology, scientific research, and innovation; information technology usage in business operations; digital economy and e-commerce; (5) In-depth specialized information.
Data collection for the 2026 National Economic Census will take place in two phases:
Phase 1 (from January 5, 2026, to March 31, 2026): This phase will focus on collecting data from business households, non-agricultural, forestry, and fishery sectors; cooperative groups; and religious and faith-based organizations.
Phase 2 (from April 1, 2026, to August 31, 2026): The second phase will involve gathering information from enterprises, non-public service units, associations, business units affiliated with administrative agencies and public service units, and branches of domestic and foreign enterprises.
Preliminary results are expected to be released in January 2027, with the official results being announced in the third quarter of 2027.
The Prime Minister will establish a Central Steering Committee for the 2026 National Economic Census.
A key feature of this census is the maximum utilization of existing administrative databases and the comprehensive application of information technology throughout the entire process, from data collection to data processing.
To ensure uniform implementation, the Prime Minister will establish a Central Steering Committee. The Ministry of Finance will take the lead in coordinating with relevant ministries, sectors, and localities to develop detailed plans, organize the implementation, and establish a census database for shared use.
Related ministries such as the Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Public Security, and Ministry of Home Affairs will coordinate and provide relevant data, as well as organize the survey within their respective management scopes. Local People’s Committees will establish provincial and communal steering committees to oversee the implementation in their respective areas.
Organizations and individuals subject to the statistical survey are responsible for providing truthful, accurate, complete, and timely information as requested by the surveyors. They are not permitted to refuse or obstruct the provision of statistical survey information.
