The Statistics Bureau (Ministry of Finance) has just announced the results of the 2024 household living standards survey, conducted across 63 provinces and centrally-run cities. The survey represented the whole country, including urban and rural areas, 6 socio-economic regions, and provinces/centrally-run cities.

According to the Statistics Bureau, in 2024, people’s incomes continued to improve and increase in both urban and rural areas. Despite the complex and unpredictable global situation with many risks and uncertainties, Vietnam’s socio-economic achievements have had a positive impact on people’s lives compared to the previous year. The average monthly income per capita in 2024 at current prices reached VND 5.4 million, up 9.1% compared to 2023, higher than the income growth rate in 2023 compared to 2022 (6.2%).

The average monthly income per capita in urban areas in 2024 reached VND 6.9 million (up 10.1% compared to 2023), more than 1.5 times higher than in rural areas, which stood at VND 4.5 million, an increase of 8.0% compared to 2023.

In 2024, the Southeast region had the highest average monthly income per capita at nearly VND 7.1 million. The region with the lowest average monthly income per capita was the North Central and Mountainous region, at nearly VND 3.8 million.

According to the Statistics Bureau, Binh Duong province had the highest income per capita in the country, at over VND 8.9 million/person/month. This province has consistently ranked first in the country in terms of per capita income. Hanoi came in second place with VND 7.55 million.

The remaining three localities in the top five provinces/cities with the highest income are: Dong Nai, Ho Chi Minh City, and Hai Phong with VND 7.15 million, VND 7.1 million, and VND 7.03 million, respectively.

The group of localities with high incomes also included: Da Nang, Can Tho, Nam Dinh, Ninh Binh, and Quang Ninh. Notably, Ninh Binh and Quang Ninh are new additions to this list.

On the other hand, up to 40 provinces and cities had income levels below the national average. Dien Bien province had the lowest income, at VND 2.38 million/person/month. Many other provinces, such as Ha Giang, Son La, Lai Chau, Cao Bang, and Bac Kan, also recorded incomes below VND 3 million.

The year 2024 is the last year the Statistics Bureau conducted a survey of 63 provinces and cities before implementing administrative rearrangement. According to the rearrangement plan, it is expected that there will be 34 provinces and cities nationwide, including the merger of Ba Ria – Vung Tau province, Binh Duong province, and Ho Chi Minh City; to be named Ho Chi Minh City, with the political and administrative center located in the current Ho Chi Minh City.
