Phúc Trạch pomelos are renowned as a signature agricultural product, helping many households in the former Huong Khe district escape poverty and achieve prosperity.
In Ha Tinh, the total area of Phúc Trạch pomelo cultivation exceeds 2,700 hectares, with an estimated yield of 20,000–25,000 tons. This pomelo variety is one of the few Vietnamese agricultural products granted Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status by the European Union, significantly boosting its export potential.
Farmers report that this year’s favorable weather has produced high-quality pomelos. However, slow market demand has driven prices lower than in previous years.
Phúc Trạch pomelos are predominantly cultivated in the communes of Phúc Trạch, Hương Đô, Hương Phố, Hà Linh, Hương Xuân, and Hương Bình. Harvesting occurs from mid-July to late September in the lunar calendar. Each pomelo tree averages 10–40 years in age, with the first harvest typically beginning in the fifth year after planting.
Mr. Phan Văn Chung, a resident of Hương Phố commune, shares that his family cultivates over 200 pomelo trees, yielding approximately 8,000 fruits and generating 160 million VND in revenue. To date, over 50% of the harvest has been sold.
During peak season, the hills glow with the radiant yellow of ripe pomelos.
Thriving in arid soil, Phúc Trạch pomelos have become a celebrated specialty of Ha Tinh’s mountainous region. Their reputation dates back to the early 20th century, when they were crowned among the finest fruits in the Indochina Fruit Fair.
Phúc Trạch commune, known as the “pomelo capital,” boasts nearly 550 hectares of cultivation. Local authorities anticipate this year’s harvest will yield over 150 billion VND in value.
During harvest season, village roads and markets are awash with the golden hues of ripe pomelos. After picking, the fruits are packed and distributed to markets.
