On September 19th, social media platforms in China were abuzz with early users sharing images of their newly purchased iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models, revealing minor scuffs on the device’s edges.

Images of the Deep Blue iPhone 17 Pro, prone to scratches, circulated on Chinese social media.
Contrary to Apple’s durability claims, users reported that the new aluminum frame, especially in the Deep Blue variant, is surprisingly susceptible to scratches. Initially, the issue seemed most prominent in the Deep Blue model. Due to its dark hue, any light-colored scratches (from the underlying aluminum) become highly visible, significantly impacting the premium aesthetic of the device.
Even the highly anticipated Cosmic Orange variant is not immune, showing noticeable scratches upon impact.

Even the Cosmic Orange variant can scratch immediately upon strong impact.

Beyond the edges, the new camera module is also vulnerable to damage upon impact.
Tech journalist Mark Gurman (Bloomberg) confirmed observing these scratches on display units in Shanghai, Hong Kong, and London. If widespread, this issue could significantly tarnish Apple’s reputation for premium quality and craftsmanship.
Experts attribute this vulnerability to the inherent properties of aluminum. While lightweight and thermally efficient, aluminum is softer than titanium or stainless steel. Additionally, dark-colored coatings tend to be less durable than bare metal or lighter shades like Silver, making scratches more apparent upon minor impacts.

Not just the iPhone 17, the iPhone Air is also reported to be prone to scratches.
The disparity between Apple’s “scratch-resistant” claims and user experiences has left many disappointed. Even minor scratches detract from the premium feel, diminish the device’s value, and force users to invest in protective cases, contradicting the desire to showcase the device’s design.
For those who own or plan to purchase the iPhone 17 Pro, especially in darker shades, using a protective case from the outset is highly recommended to preserve its beauty and long-term value.
