According to the Ha Tinh Provincial Portal, Vung Ang II Thermal Power Company Limited (VAPCO) held the inauguration ceremony for Unit 1 of the Vung Ang II Thermal Power Plant on September 18th. The project, initiated in 2007, marks a significant milestone in the region’s energy development.

Unit 1, with a capacity of 600MW, signifies the operational commencement of the $2.2 billion project, which plays a crucial role in ensuring energy security and fostering economic growth in Ha Tinh Province. This event also serves as a notable celebration leading up to the 20th Ha Tinh Provincial Party Congress for the 2025-2030 term.

The Vung Ang II Thermal Power Plant, with a total investment of $2.2 billion, is a BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) project designed with a total capacity of 1,200 MW, comprising two 600MW units. This strategic venture is a collaboration between Mitsubishi Corporation (Japan), holding a 60% stake, and Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), with a 40% stake.

The plant currently utilizes imported coal from Australia and Indonesia.

According to Mr. Fukushima, General Director of VAPCO, the project, once fully operational, will create over 500 jobs, significantly contributing to long-term economic stability in the region. During the construction phase, Vung Ang II Thermal Power Company Limited employed more than 18,600 workers, substantially boosting local employment.

The Vung Ang II Thermal Power Plant employs ultra-supercritical (USC) boiler technology. This advanced technology reduces fuel consumption and emissions once the plant is operational. When both units are fully operational, the plant will supply approximately 7.8 billion kWh annually to the national grid and contribute an average of 30 billion VND per month to the state budget.
