According to Hai Phong Newspaper, on the afternoon of September 18, 2025, Tan Cang Hai Phong International Container Terminal welcomed the ONE Singapore vessel with a capacity of 13,932 TEU, the largest container ship ever to dock in Northern Vietnam. This event marks a significant milestone not only for the port but also reinforces the strategic international gateway role of the entire Lach Huyen deep-water port cluster in Vietnam.

The selection of Tan Cang Hai Phong International Container Terminal by major global shipping lines as a destination for their mother ships stems from its robust infrastructure and unique ownership structure. The port serves as a strategic gateway, enabling direct connectivity between Northern Vietnam and major markets without the need for regional transshipment hubs, thereby optimizing costs and time for the supply chain.

The port is operated by

Tan Cang Hai Phong International Container Terminal Company Limited
, established as a joint venture among leading maritime and logistics enterprises. The largest shareholder is

Saigon Port Corporation

(holding 51% of the capital), Vietnam’s top port operator, contributing extensive operational and management expertise.

The other three shareholders are international conglomerates: Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) of Japan (17.5%), Wan Hai Lines of Taiwan (16.5%), and Itochu Corporation of Japan (15%). This structure ensures both management capability and a stable cargo flow from the shipping lines that are also shareholders.

Tan Cang Hai Phong International Container Terminal is a pioneering project and currently the core of the Lach Huyen International Gateway Port, one of Vietnam’s key maritime infrastructure projects. Strategically located, this port cluster is planned to become the international transshipment hub for Northern Vietnam.

By 2025, the Lach Huyen area has developed a synchronized deep-water port cluster with 6 operational berths. The first two berths (No. 1 and 2) have been operated by Tan Cang Hai Phong International Container Terminal Company Limited since 2018. The subsequent berths include No. 3 and 4, invested by Hai Phong Port Joint Stock Company, and No. 5 and 6, owned by Hateco Group.

With its integrated infrastructure, the entire port cluster can accommodate mother ships with a capacity exceeding 160,000 DWT, a capability beyond the reach of traditional berths in the Dinh Vu area.

Tan Cang Hai Phong International Container Terminal, with its 2 berths spanning 750 meters, a depth of -16 meters, and a system of 6 Super Post-Panamax quay cranes, continues to lead in both volume and operational expertise. In terms of operational scale, the port has demonstrated consistent growth. Peaking in 2024, the total cargo throughput reached over 1.6 million TEU, significantly surpassing its design capacity. This volume positions Tan Cang Hai Phong International Container Terminal as the leading port in terms of volume in Northern Vietnam, capturing approximately 23% of the container market share in the Hai Phong port area.

This growth momentum continued into 2025. Data from the first 7 months indicates a 34% increase in container volume across the entire Lach Huyen port cluster compared to the same period last year.

The ONE Singapore vessel is owned by

Ocean Network Express (ONE)
, a container shipping joint venture established in 2017 following the merger of the container shipping divisions of Japan’s three largest shipping companies: Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), and Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (“K” Line).

The distinctive magenta color of ONE’s fleet was chosen to create a unique brand identity in the market. Instead of using traditional industry colors, magenta makes the fleet stand out while culturally symbolizing the cherry blossoms of Japan, representing the new beginning of the joint venture.

The arrival of the ONE Singapore vessel at Tan Cang Hai Phong International Container Terminal highlights the connection between a strategic Vietnamese port infrastructure and one of the world’s largest shipping lines, reflecting Vietnam’s growing role in the global supply chain.
