In early August, I received a notice from my landlord: “Starting September, the rent will increase from 4.5 million to 6 million VND.” My 15m² room, though conveniently located in a small alley on Lê Thanh Nghị Street (Hai Bà Trưng District, Hanoi), suddenly felt like a burden. It had been my home for nearly three years.

The room is part of a larger house, with three rooms per floor sharing a bathroom and washing machine. The window is blocked by a neighboring wall, leaving just enough space for a single bed, a desk, and a small wardrobe. Monthly utility costs add up, but I accepted it for its proximity to work, saving me commuting time. Time is money, and renting near the city center felt like a worthwhile investment.

The compact unit includes a living room, bedroom, kitchen, and private bathroom—formerly used as a homestay for tourists but now offered as a long-term rental due to management difficulties.

The only drawback is the basic furniture: a bed, desk, kitchenette, fridge, and clothes rack. Additional items would be needed, but for a single person, it’s sufficient.

I began seriously considering the move. The 25km commute to work, given Hanoi’s traffic, would be challenging. However, my financial situation left me no choice but to accept a two-hour daily commute in exchange for savings and reduced financial stress.

By early September, I moved into the new apartment and realized it was a wise decision. I switched to taking the bus instead of a motorbike, allowing me to relax, listen to podcasts, read, or catch up on work emails during the journey. At home, I enjoy a spacious, comfortable environment—a true sanctuary after a long day. The financial relief is significant.

Sharing my experience with friends and colleagues, I discovered many young professionals with average incomes face similar dilemmas. They must choose between high rents near work or sacrificing convenience for affordability. I once believed paying more to live close to work was wiser than opting for cheaper, farther options, but my experience has shown that it depends on individual circumstances.

Living in the suburbs, I’ve realized that longer commutes don’t necessarily mean inconvenience. Smart solutions can optimize life here. For instance, public transportation—expanded bus and metro networks connecting the outskirts to the city center—makes travel efficient and stress-free.

Instead of battling traffic, you can relax, read, or listen to music on the bus. This not only reduces commute stress but also protects your health from pollution and tension.

When renting in the suburbs, choose areas with good infrastructure, near major roads, bus stops, or vibrant communities. This ensures easy access to public transport and prevents feelings of isolation. A lively, modern community offers an experience comparable to urban living.

From my experience, some friends are now considering suburban rentals. Moving to the outskirts isn’t just a temporary solution to rising rents and stagnant incomes; it’s a natural trend in a developing society. Suburban areas will continue to improve, offering young people high-quality, affordable living options.

On a weekend morning, sipping coffee on my small balcony, I wished I’d moved sooner instead of staying in that cramped room. Now, my time at home feels more relaxing, and my quality of life has improved.
