An important discovery in eastern Finland is sending ripples through the global mining industry.
A significant gold deposit has been found in Ukkolanvaara, Ilomantsi, that could reshape the region’s future in mining. Endomines, the mining company behind the find, encountered multiple high-grade gold zones in a single drill hole – a rare occurrence.
The company’s recent drilling confirmed the presence of exceptionally high-grade gold in unusually dense rock formations – so much so that it was easily visible. Karri Vyhtinen, Endomines’ CEO, stated that they had “never seen three high-grade gold zones in a single drill hole during previous mineral exploration.”
One notable aspect of this discovery is the presence of visible gold in some of the drill holes. This is a critical indicator for geologists and mining experts as it suggests a natural concentration of gold. For companies like Endomines, this promises more cost-effective extraction processes.
“Visible gold has been discovered in several drill holes, indicating a widespread presence,” Vyhtinen said.
Endomines is ramping up its exploration efforts to better understand the extent of the gold deposit. The company has initiated core logging, sampling, and geophysical surveying plans. Despite the variable weather conditions in Finland, the site remains accessible, and efficient transportation infrastructure supports the exploration endeavors.
Endomines’ next steps include deeper drilling at various angles to gain a clearer understanding of the gold deposit’s scope. This information is crucial for determining the future mining method – whether to opt for shaft construction or open-pit mining.
According to Earth, Ukkolanvaara is situated within a zone called the “Gold Line” in southern Finland, an area long believed to hold potential for precious metals. Surrounded by ancient metamorphic rock formations, this region neighbors other active mining projects. Geologists have noted favorable conditions signaling the presence of concentrated “pockets” of gold in this area.
If the newly discovered deposit in Ukkolanvaara proves to be as extensive as initial tests suggest, it could solidify the region’s reputation as a prominent source of precious metals, not just in Finland but globally.
