Surpassing Global Giants in Exports

According to data from the Association of Indonesia Automotive Industries (GAIKINDO), from January to August 2025, Indonesia imported a total of 99,257 completely built-up (CBU) vehicles. Among these, VinFast, Vietnam’s electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, exported 13,372 units, capturing 13.5% of the import market. This places VinFast in third position, trailing only BYD (22,964 units, 23.1%) and Toyota (22,132 units, 22.3%).

This achievement highlights VinFast’s success in outperforming established brands such as Chery (8,557 units), Mitsubishi (8,525 units), Suzuki (5,596 units), and Hyundai (1,762 units). As a result, VinFast has emerged as a dominant force in Indonesia’s imported vehicle market.

Notably, within the top 10 import brands, VinFast stands alongside a select few EV-focused companies like BYD and Aion. VinFast’s presence underscores the growing prominence of electric vehicles even in emerging markets like Indonesia.

In August alone, 4,589 VinFast vehicles were shipped to Indonesia aboard the Silver Queen, propelling VinFast to the top of the monthly import rankings, ahead of Toyota (3,459 units) and BYD (1,440 units).

Despite its strong import performance, VinFast’s sales in Indonesia remain modest, with 2,685 units sold in the first eight months of 2025, accounting for just 0.5% of the total 500,951 vehicles sold, according to GAIKINDO.

Is the Opportunity Wide Open for VinFast?

As Southeast Asia’s second-largest automotive market, Indonesia boasts a consumption rate of half a million vehicles in just eight months. The country’s robust nickel reserves, essential for battery production, have fueled its ambitious EV development strategy. VinFast’s rise to become the third-largest exporter to this market marks a significant milestone, solidifying its regional presence.

Recently, the VF 3 model was awarded “Most Impressive EV Newcomer” at the prestigious Carvaganza Editors’ Choice Awards 2025 in Indonesia. The judging panel praised its modern design, agile performance, competitive pricing, and features rivaling those from the U.S., Japan, South Korea, and China.

Additionally, the VF 3 secured a spot in the Top 3 “Best Value Vehicles” and previously earned the “Ideal First Electric Vehicle” award from AutoFun Indonesia, cementing its appeal in the compact EV segment.

Moving forward, VinFast’s strategy is likely to focus on expanding its service ecosystem, aligning with Indonesia’s EV incentives, and directly competing with fast-growing Chinese brands.
