The new Phong Chau Bridge will be inaugurated on September 28th.
Urgent Construction, Racing Against Time
On September 9, 2024, the Phong Chau Bridge, located in the communes of Phuong Nguyen and Van Xuan, unexpectedly collapsed. This not only paralyzed the vital QL32C highway but also left a profound loss for the people of Phu Tho Province. Even after a year, four individuals missing from the bridge collapse remain unfound.
Immediately following the collapse, the government approved the construction of a new bridge under emergency regulations. The project was assigned to the Thang Long Project Management Board as the investor, with Division 12 of the Truong Son Construction Corporation handling the construction. A total investment of over 635 billion VND from the central budget was promptly allocated.

The new Phong Chau Bridge is being constructed under emergency orders with a total investment of 635 billion VND.
To ensure timely completion, hundreds of engineers and workers have been working around the clock in “3 shifts, 4 teams.” From deep pile foundations beneath the riverbed, sturdy bridge piers gradually took shape. Dozens of pre-stressed concrete T-beams were urgently installed, connecting the two banks of the Red River. On August 27th, the bridge was successfully joined, marking a crucial milestone and paving the way for completion and operation by October 2025.
Colonel Tran Dang Tuan, the project commander, shared: “Since we were tasked with building the new Phong Chau Bridge, we’ve considered it a special mission. Despite challenges in geology, weather, and tight deadlines, nothing could deter our determination, as we carry the hopes of tens of thousands of people.”

A Bridge of Trust and Hope
The new Phong Chau Bridge spans nearly 383 meters in length and 20.5 meters in width, featuring 4 vehicle lanes, a median strip, railings, and a modern lighting system. The approach roads at each end of the bridge extend over 110 meters, ensuring seamless connectivity with National Highway 32C.
In late September, the Phong Chau Bridge construction site, once bustling with drilling and assembly noises, now exudes excitement and joy. Workers are busy finalizing the last touches, preparing for the inauguration on September 28th.

Alongside the busy workers, the new Phong Chau Bridge attracts many residents from both sides of the Red River, who come to admire its grandeur. Mr. Ngo Dinh Chien, a resident of Phuong Nguyen commune, shared emotionally: “My home is about 1 km from the bridge. Since learning of its upcoming inauguration, I’ve come here daily to marvel at the towering, modern structure. The bridge not only ensures our safe travel but also opens up smoother business opportunities.”
According to Colonel Tran Dang Tuan, these days, as the bridge nears completion, many residents come to visit, as if attending a festival. “We are incredibly proud and honored to have directly constructed this bridge. It holds immense significance for the people of Phu Tho Province. Seeing the joy and brightness in the eyes of the locals as they walk on the new bridge makes all our hardships during construction truly worthwhile,” Colonel Tuan said emotionally.

The bridge not only connects the communes of Van Xuan and Phuong Nguyen but also serves as a vital link in the regional transportation network. Once operational, it will help alleviate traffic on National Highway 2, shortening travel time from western Phu Tho districts to Viet Tri and Hanoi.
