Recently, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Agriculture and Environment has proposed to the Department of Finance to consider the implementation of a metro project connecting downtown Ho Chi Minh City with Can Gio, researched and invested by Vinspeed (Vingroup Corporation). The line spans approximately 49 km, with a total investment of nearly $3 billion (over 76 trillion VND), expected to commence in 2026 and complete by 2028.

According to the proposal, the metro line will be entirely elevated, starting from Nguyen Van Linh Street (between Nguyen Thi Thap and Ly Phuc Man intersections, former District 7), passing through Phu My Hung, former Nha Be, crossing the Soai Rap River, and ending at the Can Gio coastal urban area. The line includes two stations (Tan Thuan, Can Gio) and a depot on a 39-hectare plot.

Notably, the Can Gio metro line is one of the 12 urban railway lines in Ho Chi Minh City before the merger. The project is proposed with a maximum speed of 350 km/h; if approved, it will be the fastest metro line in Vietnam, three times faster than Metro Line 1 Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien (110 km/h) and significantly surpassing Cat Linh – Ha Dong (80 km/h). Furthermore, the section crossing the Soai Rap River will feature a separate cable-stayed bridge, parallel to the Can Gio Bridge. Once completed, Ho Chi Minh City will have six cable-stayed bridges, becoming the province with the most cable-stayed bridges in the country.

Additionally, the metro line will directly connect downtown Ho Chi Minh City with Vinhomes Can Gio – Vietnam’s largest coastal urban area. It will reduce travel time to approximately 12 minutes. This is considered a critical infrastructure, providing a significant boost to real estate, tourism, and services in the area.

According to Ms. Ngan, a resident of Nha Be Commune (Ho Chi Minh City), near the proposed metro route: “Recently, land prices around here have started rising again, fluctuating between 40–50 million VND/m². Once the road is completed, prices will likely increase further.”

The starting point of the metro line is expected to be at the intersection of Nguyen Van Linh – Nguyen Thi Thap – Ly Phuc Man (former District 7), approximately 5 km from the center of Saigon Ward, directly connecting with major arteries such as Nguyen Huu Tho and Huynh Tan Phat…

The section crossing the Soai Rap River is currently a riverine area with no infrastructure. Constructing the cable-stayed bridge will require complex foundation treatment.

The Rung Sac route, where the metro is expected to run parallel, is considered one of the most beautiful roads in Ho Chi Minh City, passing through the Can Gio Mangrove Forest – a world biosphere reserve, stretching over 36 km with six lanes.
