Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh Meets with Safran Executives in France

During his bilateral visit to the Republic of France, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with representatives of leading French companies, including Safran, on June 11, in the capital city of Paris.

In his meeting with Mr. Philippe Bardol, Safran’s Regional Director for Asia-Pacific, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh proposed that Safran actively support the development of Vietnam’s aviation and aerospace industries in the coming years and explore new projects that align with the country’s technological needs and orientations.

Safran is a multinational aerospace and aviation giant specializing in the design, development, and production of aircraft and helicopter engines, spacecraft propulsion systems, and other advanced aerospace technologies, shaping the global aerospace industry. As of 2024, Safran employs 100,000 people worldwide and boasts a revenue of 27.3 billion euros.

The $8 Billion Deal Between Safran and Vietjet

With over three decades of presence in Vietnam, the Safran Group has made significant contributions to the country’s aviation sector through collaborations with leading carriers such as VietJet, Vietravel, Bamboo Airways, and Vietnam Airlines.

Notably, almost a year before this encounter with Vietnam’s Prime Minister, in October 2024, Safran signed an $8 billion contract with VietJet Air for the purchase and maintenance of 400 CFM LEAP-1B engines for their 737 Max fleet.

“Today’s agreement on fuel-efficient engines reinforces our commitment to sustainability. Our passengers will benefit from even more efficient flights” – said Dr. Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, Chairwoman of VietJet Air, during the event at the Élysée Palace in Paris.

The CFM LEAP-1B engine, manufactured by CFM International (a joint venture between France’s Safran and America’s GE Aviation), offers strategic advantages, supporting Vietjet’s strategy for sustainable growth through fuel optimization and reduced CO2 emissions.

The CFM LEAP series delivers superior performance with 15-20% lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions compared to previous generations, along with significantly reduced noise levels. It is the most successful product in CFM International’s 50-year history, with the fastest accumulation of in-service hours.

Currently, over 3,500 aircraft worldwide are powered by CFM LEAP engines, helping CFM International’s customers reduce CO2 emissions by more than 35 million tons.

In 2024, global aviation contributed approximately 2.05% of total CO2 emissions, amounting to 882 million tons, an increase of nearly 8% from 2023.
