Proposed Early Construction of Runway No. 3 at Long Thanh International Airport by ACV

Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV) has submitted a proposal to the Prime Minister, seeking approval to act as the lead investor for the construction of the third runway at Long Thanh International Airport. The project is estimated to cost approximately VND 12,000 billion.

According to the National Assembly’s resolution on the Long Thanh Airport project, the third runway will span 4,000 meters in length and 60 meters in width, designed to accommodate Airbus A380 aircraft or equivalent models. This component falls under the second phase of the project’s investment, alongside the construction of the second passenger terminal, aiming to increase capacity to 50 million passengers and 1.5 million tons of cargo annually.

To date, the first runway of Long Thanh Airport has been substantially completed, meeting calibration flight requirements since September 26. The second runway, which began construction in June, is expected to be finalized by December this year.

ACV highlights that accelerating the third runway’s construction offers significant advantages. Leveraging the existing workforce and machinery from contractors working on the first and second runways during the 2025-2026 dry season will save time, mobilization costs, and shorten the construction timeline.

Additionally, early construction of the third runway and other phase two components will minimize dust, noise, and equipment traffic impacts on the site once Long Thanh Airport’s first phase becomes operational in the first half of 2026.

Beyond the third runway, ACV has also proposed serving as the primary investor for the entire second phase of the Long Thanh Airport project. The company pledges to utilize its lawful capital to fulfill investor responsibilities, select international consultants for feasibility studies, and submit key reports to the Government for National Assembly approval before the Prime Minister’s final decision.

In August, the Prime Minister directed the Ministry of Construction and ACV to explore and propose the implementation of the third runway for Long Thanh Airport.
