Pearl Theatre and Thematic Arts Park Project to Break Ground in Hanoi’s Tay Ho District Tomorrow (October 5th)

Tomorrow, October 5th, marks the official groundbreaking of the Pearl Theatre and Thematic Arts Park project in Hanoi’s Tay Ho District. This landmark development is a centerpiece of the city’s 71st Liberation Day celebrations (October 10th, 1954 – October 10th, 2025).

With a total investment of nearly $500 million USD (approximately 13 trillion VND), the project is spearheaded by Sun Group’s subsidiary, Sun City Company. It’s poised to become a new iconic symbol of Hanoi in the years to come.

The Pearl Theatre (Hanoi Opera House) will grace the Quang An Peninsula, a prime location considered the “jewel” of Hanoi. The project spans over 19 hectares, with the theatre and arts park occupying a sprawling 18 hectares. The project’s leasehold is set for 50 years.

The Hanoi Opera House is part of the Sun Grand City Tay Ho View development by Sun Group. It’s strategically located with Dang Thai Mai Street to the east and southeast, West Lake to the west, existing residential areas to the northwest, and a planned road connecting Dang Thai Mai to Quang Ba to the north.

Pearl Theatre to Rise on Hanoi’s Quang An Peninsula

The project is divided into three phases: preparation (Q1-Q3 2025), construction (Q4 2025 – Q1 2029), and finalization (Q2-Q3 2029).

The Pearl Theatre’s crowning glory is its architecturally stunning design. Inspired by the ripples of West Lake, the ceramic-clad dome roof shimmers and reflects light, creating a mesmerizing display of colors. Remarkably, the roof’s shell structure boasts an ultra-thin profile, ranging from just 200 to 600 mm in thickness.

Renowned architect Renzo Piano, the mastermind behind global landmarks like the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris and The Shard in London, is the visionary behind this project.

The theatre’s interior is equally impressive, featuring a state-of-the-art acoustic system with adjustable walls for optimal sound reflection, absorption, and reverberation, catering to diverse performance genres.

With a seating capacity exceeding 2,000, the Pearl Theatre is set to become one of Asia’s largest performing arts venues.

Pearl Theatre: Asia’s Future Cultural Powerhouse

As part of the Quang An Peninsula master plan, the Pearl Theatre will be a cultural hub integrated with the West Lake – Red River – Co Loa Citadel axis. This area aims to preserve its historical and cultural heritage while developing tourism, arts, and maximizing the potential of lakeside land.

West Lake, with its 400 hectares of water and surrounding historical sites, will be further enriched by the Pearl Theatre, promising a new era for Hanoi’s cultural and tourism landscape.

In addition to the Pearl Theatre, seven other projects will break ground during the 71st Liberation Day celebrations:

1. Le Hong Phong Cadre Training School Construction Project

2. Hanoi Kidney Hospital (Branch 2) Construction Project

3. Hanoi Metro Line 2 (Nam Thang Long – Tran Hung Dao Section) and Detailed Planning Announcement for C9 Station, Route Alignment, and Structures from C8 to C10 Stations (1:500 Scale), along with the Commencement of the Compensation, Resettlement, and Land Clearance Project for the East Hoan Kiem Lake Plaza and Park.

4. Tran Hung Dao Bridge Construction Project (Component 2)

5. Co Linh Intersection Underpass Construction Project

6. Thuong Cat Bridge and Approach Roads Construction Project

7. To Lich River Banks Park Construction Project
