The People’s Committee of Nghe An Province recently announced the master plan for Vinh International Airport for the period 2021 – 2030, with a vision towards 2050.

The goal for the 2021 – 2030 period is to achieve a 4E airport classification (as per ICAO standards), with a capacity of approximately 8 million passengers per year and 25,000 tons of cargo annually. The airport will accommodate aircraft types such as Code C (A320/A321 and equivalents) and Code E (B747/B777/B787/A350 and equivalents).

By 2050, the airport aims to maintain its 4E classification, with an increased capacity of around 14 million passengers per year and 35,000 tons of cargo. The aircraft types will remain Code C and Code E, as mentioned above.

Regarding the runway system, the 2021 – 2030 plan includes extending the existing runway to 3,000m x 45m at the 17-end. By 2050, a second runway of the same dimensions is planned, oriented 02-20, located east of the current runway.

For the taxiway system, the 2021 – 2030 plan involves constructing parallel taxiways: Taxiway 1, 182m west of the centerline of Runway 1, and Taxiway 2, approximately 180m east of Runway 1. A network of connecting taxiways and rapid exit taxiways will be developed to link the parallel taxiways with the runway and apron.

By 2050, Taxiway 3 will be added, approximately 180m west of the centerline of Runway 2, along with a comprehensive system of connecting and rapid exit taxiways.

For the aircraft apron, the 2021 – 2030 plan includes expanding the existing apron to accommodate approximately 15 Code C aircraft parking positions, and developing a new apron near Terminal 2 to accommodate around 10 aircraft.

By 2050, the apron near Terminal 2 will be expanded to accommodate approximately 29 aircraft parking positions, with additional space reserved for future expansion.

Regarding aviation service facilities, for the 2021 – 2030 period, Terminal 1 will be expanded to handle approximately 5 million passengers per year, and a new Terminal 2 will be constructed between the two runways, with a capacity of around 3 million passengers annually.

By 2050, Terminal 2 will be expanded to handle approximately 9 million passengers per year, bringing the total airport capacity to around 14 million passengers annually. Land will be reserved for future development as needed.

For the cargo terminal, the 2021 – 2030 plan involves maintaining the existing cargo terminal and developing a new cargo terminal and apron north of Terminal 1, with a capacity of approximately 25,000 tons per year. By 2050, the cargo terminal will be expanded to handle around 35,000 tons annually.

With this master plan, Vinh International Airport is expected to become a key aviation and logistics hub in North Central Vietnam, directly connecting to the North-South Expressway, the coastal road, and Cua Lo Port. This strategic transportation network will significantly boost regional economic development.

Vinh Airport began operations in late 2003 with a design capacity of 2.75 million passengers per year and 21-26 daily flights. Despite its international airport status, it currently operates no international routes.

In July of this year, the airport was temporarily closed for infrastructure upgrades and repairs, with a total investment of nearly 1 trillion VND.
