The Department of Agriculture and Environment of Ho Chi Minh City has submitted a proposal to the Department of Finance, advocating for the development of a Metro line connecting downtown Ho Chi Minh City to Can Gio. This project, proposed by Vinspeed under Vingroup, spans approximately 49 km with a total investment of nearly $3 billion (over 76 trillion VND). Construction is slated to begin in 2026, with completion expected by 2028.

The proposed Can Gio Metro line will be entirely elevated, starting from Nguyen Van Linh Street (between Nguyen Thi Thap and Ly Phuc Man intersections, former District 7), passing through Phu My Hung urban area, former Nha Be district, crossing the Soai Rap River, and ending at the Can Gio coastal urban area.

The Metro line is expected to feature two main stations, Tan Thuan and Can Gio, along with a 39-hectare depot for operations and maintenance. Upon completion, it will be Ho Chi Minh City’s first coastal Metro line, directly connecting the city center to the future seaside urban area.

Notably, the Metro line connecting downtown Ho Chi Minh City to Can Gio is one of 12 urban railway lines planned before the city’s expansion. The project is proposed to operate at a maximum design speed of 350 km/h, the fastest in Vietnam to date.

If approved, this Metro line will be over three times faster than Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien, 110 km/h) and significantly surpass the Cat Linh – Ha Dong line (80 km/h), drastically reducing travel time between downtown Ho Chi Minh City and Can Gio.

The starting point of the Metro line is proposed at the intersection of Nguyen Van Linh – Nguyen Thi Thap – Ly Phuc Man (former District 7), approximately 5 km from the city center, with convenient access to major roads like Nguyen Huu Tho and Huynh Tan Phat. The first station is planned for Binh Thuan Ward (former District 7).

The Rung Sac route, where the Can Gio Metro line is proposed to run parallel, is considered one of Ho Chi Minh City’s most scenic roads. Spanning over 36 km with six lanes, it winds through the Can Gio Mangrove Forest, a UNESCO-recognized world biosphere reserve.

Once operational, passengers will enjoy a unique experience, taking in panoramic views of the mangrove forests, rivers, and Can Gio’s distinctive ecosystem during their high-speed, modern journey.

The combination of modern infrastructure and large-scale projects is expected to position Can Gio as a new growth hub for Ho Chi Minh City, shaping a vibrant, modern seaside urban landscape in the future.
