On the morning of October 9, 2025, at Xuân Đỉnh Depot, the Hanoi People’s Committee solemnly held the groundbreaking ceremony for the Hanoi Urban Railway Line 2 project, Nam Thăng Long – Trần Hưng Đạo section.

The event took place in a dignified and proud atmosphere, marking the 71st anniversary of the Capital Liberation Day (October 10, 1954 – October 10, 2025), signifying a crucial step toward building a modern, green, and sustainable public transportation system in Hanoi.

A National Key Project, Symbolizing Vietnam-Japan Cooperation

The Hanoi Urban Railway Line 2 project, Nam Thăng Long – Trần Hưng Đạo section, is a nationally significant endeavor, utilizing ODA loans from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) alongside matching funds from the Hanoi City budget. It stands as a testament to the enduring friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and Japan.

The line spans 10.84 km, including 1.94 km elevated and 8.9 km underground, featuring 10 stations: C1 – Xuân Đỉnh, C2 – Ngoại Giao Đoàn, C3 – Tây Hồ Tây, C4 – Bưởi, C5 – Quần Ngựa, C6 – Bách Thảo, C7 – Hồ Tây, C8 – Hàng Đậu, C9 – Hoàn Kiếm, and C10 – Trần Hưng Đạo.

Xuân Đỉnh Depot, covering 11.3 hectares, serves as a maintenance, repair, and operational training hub, developed under the Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) model. This integrates transportation infrastructure with smart, sustainable urban growth.

FECON Reinforces Its Expertise as the First Contractor for Metro Line 2

In the initial package of Metro Line 2, FECON (FCN) was selected to execute the foundation treatment for Xuân Đỉnh Depot, valued at nearly 200 billion VND with a 499-day timeline.

This pivotal package sets the stage for the entire project, underscoring FECON’s capabilities in foundation, infrastructure, and underground works—strengths demonstrated in projects like Metro Line 1 in Ho Chi Minh City and Metro Line 3 Nhổn – Hà Nội Station, alongside other key infrastructure initiatives.

For Metro Line 3 in Hanoi, FECON pioneered the use of advanced technologies such as D-wall earth-retaining walls, Jetgrouting waterproofing, and pressurized earth balance TBM tunneling. Successfully operating two TBM robots to excavate parallel tunnels from S9 – Kim Mã Station to S12 – Trần Hưng Đạo Station, FECON’s hands-on experience forms a critical foundation for its contributions to subsequent metro projects, including Hanoi’s Metro Line 2.

TOD – Toward Connected and Sustainable Urban Development

Metro Line 2 is more than a transportation project; it’s a catalyst for smart urban development, aligning with the 2025 Railway Law and Resolution 188/2025/QH15 on special mechanisms for metro systems in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Xuân Đỉnh Depot will serve as Hanoi’s first TOD pilot, integrating transit with commercial, service, and residential spaces, driving growth in the capital’s northern region. Meanwhile, the four-level underground station C9 – Hoàn Kiếm Lake connects directly to the lake’s three-level eastern plaza, exemplifying a core TOD model that merges underground transit, public space, and urban heritage.
