According to the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA), the total market sales in September 2025 reached 30,688 vehicles. This figure represents an 18% increase compared to August, signaling a rebound in the domestic automobile market.

However, sales in September 2025 were 16% lower than the same period in 2024, which marked the beginning of the 2024 registration fee incentive program.

In September, passenger car sales reached 20,559 units, a 19% increase from August. Commercial vehicles (9,535 units) and special-purpose vehicles (594 units) also saw growth, rising by 14% and 97%, respectively.

Domestic car sales have rebounded after two consecutive months of decline.

VAMA notes that these figures represent actual retail sales by its members and imports of completely built-up vehicles by non-VAMA entities in September.

In terms of origin, domestically assembled vehicles sold 14,427 units in September, a 14% increase from the previous month. Imported vehicles also showed positive growth, rising by 22% to 16,261 units.

Among vehicle segments, SUVs/Crossovers remained the best-selling category in September with 9,265 units, a 30% increase from the previous month.

The MPV segment saw the most significant growth, nearly 60%, with 4,815 units sold. Other segments showing positive growth include pickup trucks (2,531 units, +19%) and hybrids (1,371 units, +5%), while sedans saw a slight 0.5% decrease to 2,940 units.

In the electric vehicle segment, VinFast reported selling 13,914 electric vehicles in September, a 27% increase. Ford’s first electric vehicle in Vietnam sold 13 units in September, a promising start given its price tag of VND 2.6 billion.

VinFast continues to lead in domestic car sales.

Overall, September 2025 saw growth across most vehicle categories and segments in Vietnam. Despite the majority of the month falling within the Ghost Month, aggressive pricing strategies by manufacturers and dealers helped revive domestic car sales.

In addition to promotions, the Vietnamese car market in September was energized by several new launches, including the Mitsubishi Xpander 2025, Kia Sorento and Kia Morning updates, Skoda Slavia, Mercedes-Benz EQB 2025, and Mini Countryman JCW 2025.

Returning to VAMA’s report, the strong September sales pushed the year-to-date total past 250,000 units. Specifically, the first nine months of 2025 saw total market sales of 251,421 vehicles, an 11.5% increase compared to the same period in 2024.

VinFast announced it had sold 100,000 vehicles in the first three quarters of 2025. These figures highlight the growth of Vietnam’s automobile market following a challenging 2024, which required government support.

Among brands, VinFast led in sales for the first nine months of 2025. Following were Toyota (48,126 units, +19%), Ford (33,655 units, +20%), Mitsubishi (25,009 units, -10%), Mazda (21,772 units, +2%), Honda (17,829 units, +1%), and Kia (17,817 units, -22%). Hyundai Thanh Cong has not yet released its September figures but is expected to maintain its third-place position in the market.
