Mr. Tran Vo Anh Minh, Deputy Director of the Urban Railway Management Department at the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, announced that the land clearance for Metro Line 2 (Ben Thanh – Tham Luong) has been completed. Contractors are now finalizing the relocation of essential utilities such as electricity and water systems in areas designated for underground station construction.
The developer’s goal is to ensure a completely cleared site for handover to the construction team before the project’s groundbreaking.
Land clearance for the Ben Thanh – Tham Luong metro line is now fully completed.
According to Mr. Minh, construction of Metro Line 2 (Ben Thanh – Tham Luong) is scheduled to commence in April 2026. The total construction period is estimated at 57 months, with the line expected to begin official operations in December 2030.
Before its official launch, the metro will undergo a three-month trial run starting in September 2030.
Key milestones for the project have been outlined by the developer. The EPC contract tendering process is set to conclude by March 2026.
Tunneling work is expected to be completed by April 2029, while construction and system installation will be finalized by April 2030.
Metro Line 2 (Ben Thanh – Tham Luong) spans a total length of 62.17 km, featuring 42 stations. The total investment is approximately VND 54,000 billion, with Phase 1 initiated in 2019.
Phase 1 covers the section from Ben Thanh to Tan Binh and the Tham Luong Depot, stretching 11.68 km with 11 stations, including 9 underground and 2 elevated stations.
The expansion phase includes extensions eastward from Ben Thanh to Thu Thiem (5.89 km) and northward from Tan Binh to An Suong Bus Station, Hoc Mon, Phu Cuong Bridge, and the Binh My Depot (28.93 km).
A branch line from Hoc Mon to Cu Chi and the Phuoc Hiep Depot spans 16.25 km.
The Tham Luong Depot will serve both Metro Line 2 (Ben Thanh – Tham Luong) and Metro Line 6.

The metro line is designed for fully automated operation with a maximum speed of 90/80 km/h. Initially, 14 three-car trains will be deployed.
The developer estimates that during the initial phase, Metro Line 2 will serve approximately 227,000 daily passengers, with peak ridership reaching around 11,856 passengers per hour.
According to Mr. Nguyen Vinh Toan, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, the city’s urban railway network, post-merger, will span approximately 1,012 km. This includes 12 lines covering 582 km in the former Ho Chi Minh City area.
The former Binh Duong area will have 12 lines totaling 305 km, and the former Ba Ria – Vung Tau area will have 3 lines spanning 125 km.
Additionally, the Thu Thiem – Long Thanh railway line, nearly 42 km long, is under consideration by the Prime Minister to be managed by the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, and will be integrated into the urban railway planning for Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai Province.
Metro Line 2 (Ben Thanh – Tham Luong) passes through densely populated areas with 9 underground stations.
Following the implementation of Resolution No. 188, investment procedures for metro projects have been significantly streamlined. Notably, the direct appointment of consultants for Metro Line 2 reduced the timeline by at least 12 months compared to previous international tendering processes. The project also bypassed the investment policy approval stage, saving 3-5 years, and proceeded directly to the feasibility study phase.
After the groundbreaking of Metro Line 2 (Ben Thanh – Tham Luong), Ho Chi Minh City aims to complete compensation, support, and resettlement by 2027. Construction of 9 additional lines is set to begin by late 2027, with 355 km of track completed by 2035.
Several private investors have shown interest in Ho Chi Minh City’s urban railway projects. Vingroup is investing in a railway connecting downtown Ho Chi Minh City to Can Gio District. Truong Hai, in partnership with Hyundai Rotem, is involved in constructing sections of Metro Line 2, including Ben Thanh – Tham Luong, Ben Thanh – Thu Thiem, and Thu Thiem – Long Thanh. Sovico Group is also exploring the development of Metro Line 4, connecting Hoc Mon and Nha Be.
