These wonders of the future are not only being built but are being co-created by citizens who care about the legacy they leave behind.”

Can Vietnam Make the List?

Following the success of Ha Long Bay, recognized as one of the “New 7 Wonders of Nature,” can Vietnamese cities secure a spot on the global urban map? While it’s too early to answer definitively, Vietnam’s efforts to develop its cities in alignment with the pillars of sustainability, innovation, and inclusivity—key criteria set by New7Wonders—are evident.

Rather than focusing on monumental structures or massive budgets, future cities must adopt holistic and sustainable development strategies. In Vietnam, sustainability has evolved from a slogan to a core principle in urban planning. Despite starting later than regional peers, Vietnam has made significant strides in sustainable urban development. Major cities are implementing ESG-aligned projects, leveraging renewable energy, adopting circular waste management, and designing climate-resilient infrastructure. These efforts not only reduce emissions but also enhance urban resilience to climate shocks.

Innovation serves as the intellectual engine driving Vietnam’s cities into the digital age. Many new-generation urban areas have embraced smart city technologies, utilizing IoT, AI, Big Data, and modern urban management systems. This shift underscores Vietnam’s commitment to technological advancement.

Inclusivity is the third critical factor in Vietnam’s urban development, ensuring no one is left behind. This principle is reflected in initiatives that promote community livelihoods and local engagement, fostering equitable growth.

Building on the legacy of Ha Long Bay, Vietnam is making its mark on the global urban stage through innovative and iconic projects—strong contenders for the title of “urban wonders” of the 21st century. These cities are not just architectural marvels but living testaments to a pioneering journey toward sustainability, with clear vision, decisive action, and unwavering dedication.

When the voting portal opens in 2026, Vietnam, with the active support of its citizens, stands a strong chance of claiming a second global victory as a future urban wonder.
