In the quest for the “King Crab” to grace the upcoming grand event in Ca Mau, seasoned crab farmers revealed on November 5th that crabs weighing 1.452 kg or more are exceptionally rare.

Crabs weighing 1.452 kg or more are extremely rare.

Mr. Nguyen Van Ba (68 years old, from Hung My commune, Ca Mau province) shared that he has been engaged in crab farming combined with shrimp farming for over 20 years. However, he has never caught a crab weighing more than 1.1 kg.

“Only once, six years ago, I caught a male crab weighing over 1 kg, which was the largest I’ve ever seen,” said Mr. Ba.

Similarly, Mr. Du Thai Binh (from Nam Can commune, Ca Mau province) noted that crabs weighing 1.452 kg or more are primarily found in farming areas in Nam Can and Ngoc Hien.

“Such large crabs are typically leftovers from harvests in Nam Can and Ngoc Hien, where the mangrove ecosystem and high salinity near the sea allow crabs to live longer. I’ve been in the crab trading business for six years, but I’ve only been fortunate enough to find 1-2 crabs of this weight,” said Mr. Binh.

The Department of Science and Technology of Ca Mau province is organizing a competition to establish a record for the largest crab in Ca Mau. This is part of the “Ca Mau Crab Festival II – 2025.”

The competition is open for entries from October 20th to November 18th at 3 PM. Participating crabs must originate from Ca Mau, weigh 1.452 kg or more, and have all their parts intact.

The primary criterion for setting the record is based on weight. In the event of a tie, the organizing committee will measure the carapace size as a secondary criterion. The heaviest crab will be nominated for the Vietnam record.

The award ceremony will take place on the evening of November 18th at Phan Ngoc Hien Square, An Xuyên ward, Ca Mau province. The prize structure includes: first prize of 15 million VND, second prize of 10 million VND, and third prize of 5 million VND.

In 2022, Ca Mau hosted the “Largest Ca Mau Crab” competition as part of the “Ca Mau Crab Festival I.” The first prize of 15 million VND was awarded to the owner of the largest crab in Ca Mau, weighing 1.452 kg.
