On November 19th, the Dak Lak Provincial People’s Committee held a conference to review the 2025 durian crop and outline plans for 2026.

Dak Lak Provincial People’s Committee convenes durian crop review conference

Dak Lak province boasts approximately 44,900 hectares of durian cultivation, accounting for roughly a quarter of Vietnam’s total durian area. The 2025 harvest is estimated at 390,769 tons, a 30,000-ton increase compared to 2024.

The province has received approval for 269 plantation codes covering 7,413 hectares and 40 fresh fruit packaging facilities for export. Dak Lak’s fresh durians are exported to numerous countries and territories, with China remaining the primary market. Durian export revenue for the first ten months of 2025 is projected to exceed USD 3.2 billion.

Despite these achievements, Ms. Dang Thi Thuy, Deputy Director of the Dak Lak Department of Agriculture and Environment, highlighted persistent challenges within the durian industry.

These include fragmented and small-scale farming practices, limited adoption of advanced agricultural technologies, inconsistent quality leading to rejections from China due to cadmium and lead contamination, fraudulent planting area declarations, lack of transparency in the supply chain, weak value chain linkages, and inadequate production infrastructure.

At the conference, representatives from the Dak Lak Provincial Police Department reported a significant disparity between the number of plantation codes and packaging facility codes and the actual cultivation area and production volume. This scarcity has led some exporters to purchase code dossiers, increasing costs and introducing risks.

China’s General Administration of Customs has issued warnings, suspensions, and even revocations of plantation and packaging facility codes found to be in violation. This has resulted in financial losses for code holders and exporters, while also damaging the reputation of Vietnamese durians.

Investigations by the Dak Lak Provincial Police Department reveal that export service providers at northern border gates charge between VND 140-200 million to handle export procedures, including plantation and packaging facility codes, cadmium and lead testing. There are indications of collusion between testing facilities and exporters, raising concerns about conflicts of interest.

To address these challenges, the Dak Lak Provincial People’s Committee has directed efforts to restructure the durian industry, promote sustainable development, and control new planting areas. Enhanced quality control and food safety measures will be implemented, including regular sampling and testing for cadmium and lead at packaging facilities and plantations.

The province will also focus on digital transformation and transparent traceability throughout the entire supply chain, from production and processing to distribution.
