According to the Government’s Electronic Information Portal, on the afternoon of November 20, Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son inspected the construction progress of the Nhon Trach 3 and 4 Thermal Power Plant complex in Dong Nai province.

The project, invested by Vietnam Oil and Gas Power Corporation (PV Power), has a total designed capacity of 1,624 MW and a total investment of up to $1.4 billion. It is one of the few projects globally featuring gas turbine units with a capacity exceeding 500 MW and a thermal efficiency of over 60%. Once operational, the complex will contribute 9 billion kWh annually to the national power grid.

During the inspection, Mr. Le Nhu Linh, General Director of PV Power, stated that these are the most cost-effective LNG power plants in Vietnam to date.

Both plants have been constructed on schedule, without exceeding the approved investment capital, thanks to the support and oversight of the Appraisal Council. Nhon Trach 3 Power Plant is ready for commercial operation as of November 20, while Nhon Trach 4 will be operational by December.

After the survey, Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son expressed his delight at witnessing the completion of one of the oil and gas industry’s key projects, ready for commercial operation.

He emphasized that the project plays a crucial role in ensuring national energy security, particularly as Vietnam aims for high growth, attracts high-tech projects, and meets the substantial electricity demands of data centers and artificial intelligence applications.

Additionally, the project supports the energy transition toward achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, while significantly contributing to Dong Nai province’s budget.

Moving forward, the Deputy Prime Minister urged PV Power to collaborate with the Appraisal Council to evaluate the plant’s modernity and complete the acceptance process. He also called on international contractors to continue partnering with PV Power in training personnel and transferring operation technology, enabling PV Power to independently manage the plant complex.

During the inspection, the Deputy Prime Minister requested Dong Nai province to expedite land clearance for the construction of 17 power pole foundations under the 220kV transmission line project, essential for the plants’ capacity utilization.

Regarding PV Power’s proposals, the Deputy Prime Minister instructed the Ministry of Industry and Trade to review, study, and propose mechanisms and policies for approval by competent authorities, ensuring immediate implementation if deemed effective.
