According to Reuters, citing an anonymous source close to the matter, VietJet (VJC) is planning to resume operations using COMAC aircraft after a one-month suspension.

Last month, VietJet halted flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to the popular tourist destination of Con Dao Island. This decision came after a six-month lease agreement with China’s Chengdu Airlines for two COMAC C909 aircraft expired, citing high costs and regulatory challenges.

Reuters reports that VietJet’s flights to Con Dao will resume on November 25th, with four daily flights. While company documents reviewed by Reuters did not specify the aircraft model, two sources confirmed that a renewed six-month lease agreement with Chengdu Airlines will bring the C909 aircraft back into service.

The new wet lease agreement with Chengdu Airlines includes the provision of two C909 aircraft, along with pilots, maintenance, and operational support, mirroring the previous arrangement. VietJet is also exploring other COMAC leasing options, though these remain under regulatory review.

The route to Con Dao Island is constrained by the airport’s 1,800-meter (5,900-foot) runway, limiting operators to specific aircraft types. The C909’s short-runway capability aligns with these requirements.

The lease extension comes as VietJet, which primarily operates a fleet of over 100 Airbus (AIR.PA) aircraft, adjusts its operations to meet holiday travel demand.

COMAC’s C909 aircraft, with a capacity of up to 90 passengers, has been in commercial operation since 2016. It is currently in use in China, Indonesia, and Laos, with orders from airlines in Cambodia and Brunei.

On November 18th, VietJet Air notified the Southern Airports Authority in Con Dao and Con Dao Airport of its plans to resume flights connecting to Con Dao Airport.

Starting November 25th, the airline will deploy four aircraft to operate two routes: Hanoi – Con Dao and Ho Chi Minh City – Con Dao, with one daily flight in each direction.

Previously, from April 2025, VietJet Air operated direct flights between Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Con Dao. However, by mid-October 2025, the airline suspended operations, forcing passengers from northern Vietnam to connect through Ho Chi Minh City or Can Tho before continuing to the island.
