Prolonged heavy rainfall has triggered severe flooding and landslides across Central Vietnam and the Central Highlands, particularly in Lam Dong Province. Critical mountain passes like Prenn, Khanh Le, D’ran, and Mimosa have experienced significant landslides, disrupting traffic and posing serious safety risks.
Continuous heavy rain has led to substantial water accumulation, eroding retaining walls and causing a partial road collapse on the Prenn Pass at Km224+650. The steep terrain and complex geology, coupled with worsening weather, heighten the risk of further landslides.
On November 17, 2025, the Lam Dong Provincial People’s Committee issued Decision No. 2193/QD-UBND, declaring a state of emergency for the section between Km224+600 and Km224+700 on the Prenn Pass, a vital gateway to Da Lat.
At the request of the Project Management Board, Deo Ca Group agreed to support urgent measures, including installing safety barriers, traffic warning signs, and steel sheet piles at hazardous landslide points to temporarily restore traffic flow.
On November 19, 2025, DCC finalized the technical plan and mobilized personnel and equipment to commence work. Concurrently, they coordinated traffic management, conducted surveys, and developed long-term stabilization designs to advise local authorities.
According to the schedule, the sheet piling, safety barriers, and warning signs are expected to be completed by November 24. The Department of Construction will then inspect and approve traffic rerouting plans for the Prenn Pass.
Alongside road repairs, contractors are installing safety barriers and traffic signs to enable temporary one-way traffic flow.
A DCC representative noted the complex construction conditions, including a hard, rocky foundation, necessitating pre-drilling before sheet piling. This has slowed progress and increased labor intensity.
To meet the November 25 deadline for temporary two-lane traffic restoration, the construction team is working around the clock, including overnight shifts.
The Prenn Pass upgrade and expansion project began on February 10, 2023. By January 2024, the section from Datala Waterfall to the end of the pass was opened to traffic.
On July 26, 2024, the investor completed the final inspection, and the Lam Dong Department of Transport (now the Department of Construction) approved the project for operation with a one-year warranty period (July 26, 2024 – July 26, 2025).
The original 7-meter-wide road with two lanes traversed steep, winding terrain, compromising visibility and safety for drivers.
Following the upgrade, the Prenn Pass now boasts Vietnam’s widest mountain road at 14.5 meters, featuring four lanes equivalent to a limited-access highway (Phase 1 investment). The full-length lighting system has significantly enhanced traffic capacity and safety.
