The Transformation of the Depot Area on the Nam Thang Long – Tran Hung Dao Metro Line After One Month of Construction

In recent days, the Xuân Đỉnh depot area, part of the Nam Thăng Long - Trần Hưng Đạo metro line project in Hanoi, has seen vibrant development. The entire 11.3-hectare construction site for the depot in Xuân Đỉnh ward has been fully prepared. This marks Hanoi’s first depot built under the Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) model, integrating smart transportation solutions.

Following the groundbreaking ceremony on October 9, 2025, the developer and contractors have fenced off the entire site of the Xuan Dinh depot to commence construction.

Spanning approximately 11.3 hectares and adjacent to the Ring Road 3 (red arrow), the Xuan Dinh depot is not only a maintenance facility for the metro system (depot and project road depicted in the inset) but also a smart transportation hub integrated with other transit modes (TOD).

The depot’s construction site primarily consists of farmland and ponds. Contractors are currently deploying machinery to build embankments for material transport.

As of November 2025, over 70% of the depot’s construction area has been leveled and prepared for foundation work.

Excavators are constructing temporary access roads to facilitate movement across the depot site.

By midday on November 25, engineers and designers began surveying the leveled site to gather coordinates for detailed construction plans.

Excavators are testing the settlement of the newly leveled ground to ensure stability.

The Hanoi Urban Railway Management Board, the project developer, announced that the Xuan Dinh depot will be constructed from 2025 to 2029. It will be Hanoi’s first TOD-standard depot, integrating transit-oriented development principles.

The Metro Line 2 project, spanning Nam Thang Long to Tran Hung Dao (Section 2.1), commenced on October 9, 2025, with a total investment of VND 35.679 trillion, primarily funded by a JICA ODA loan.

The 10.84 km line includes 1.94 km elevated and 8.9 km underground sections, with the latter traversing Hanoi’s historic center, including the Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake. The route features 10 stations: C1 – Xuan Dinh, C2 – Ngoai Giao Doan, C3 – Tay Ho Tay, C4 – Buoi, C5 – Quan Ngu, C6 – Bach Thao, C7 – Ho Tay, C8 – Hang Dau, C9 – Hoan Kiem, and C10 – Tran Hung Dao. This project is pivotal to Hanoi’s 15-line metro network, connecting Ba Dinh’s political hub and Hoan Kiem’s historic core with northern development zones.

The 11.3-hectare Xuan Dinh depot will serve as a maintenance, repair, and training center. Unlike other depots, it is designed as a transit-oriented development (TOD), seamlessly integrating smart urban infrastructure with sustainable transportation solutions.
