Electric Vehicles Propel C-Segment SUV Sales to New Heights

In the first 10 months of 2025, the mid-size SUV segment achieved sales of nearly 43,000 units. The Mazda CX-5 maintained its leading position, while the VinFast VF 7 made a remarkable ascent to the top 3, just two years after its launch.

Alongside affordable B-class sedans, SUVs, and compact MPVs, the midsize SUV segment has also seen strong sales in Vietnam during 2025. According to reports from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA), TC Motor, and VinFast, Vietnamese consumers purchased 42,844 midsize SUVs in the first 10 months of 2025, a 42% increase compared to the same period last year.

Among these, the Mazda CX-5 continues to dominate the segment. This “sales king” of midsize SUVs sold a total of 12,900 units since the beginning of 2025, capturing a 30% market share.

Mazda CX-5 maintains its lead in the midsize SUV segment.

Compared to the same period last year, the cumulative sales of the Mazda CX-5 have increased by nearly 15%. This growth is fueled by months-long promotional campaigns from the manufacturer and dealerships, helping the CX-5 maintain its top position.

Following the Japanese model is the Ford Territory, with cumulative sales of 9,585 units, capturing a 22% market share. Like the CX-5, the Territory benefits significantly from discount policies. It is also the only model to have outsold the CX-5 in a single month this year.

In third place is the VinFast VF 7, with cumulative sales of over 7,067 units by October, nearly 700 units more than the fourth-placed Tucson. Since VinFast did not disclose detailed sales figures for its models in 2024, the growth rate of the VF 7 cannot be assessed.

However, the VF 7’s rise to third place within approximately two years of its launch demonstrates its growing appeal and acceptance among consumers. The VF 7’s sales of over 7,000 units have significantly contributed to the 42% growth of the midsize SUV segment this year.

The VF 7’s rise is intensifying competition in the midsize SUV segment.

In Vietnam, the VinFast VF 7 is highly regarded for its sporty design and performance (in the all-wheel-drive version), along with its cost-effective operation. If it maintains its current growth trajectory, the VinFast VF 7’s position could be further strengthened in the future.

The remaining positions are held by the Hyundai Tucson (6,389 units), Honda CR-V (4,895 units), Kia Sportage (1,146 units), and Mitsubishi Outlander (362 units). Additionally, the midsize SUV segment includes other models like the Skoda Karoq, Subaru Forester, BYD Sealion 6, Jaecoo J7, and Haval H6, but their sales figures have not been disclosed by the manufacturers.

Model 2025 Cumulative 2024 Cumulative Growth
Mazda CX-5 12,900 11,248 +14.6%
Ford Territory 9,585 6,257 +53%
VinFast VF 7 7,067
Hyundai Tucson 6,389 4,087 +56%
Honda CR-V 4,895 4,987 -1.8%
Kia Sportage 1,646 2,373 -30%
Mitsubishi Outlander 362 1,129 -72%

Among the models with disclosed sales figures, the Ford Territory and Hyundai Tucson recorded the highest growth rates, at 53% and 56%, respectively. Conversely, the Kia Sportage and Mitsubishi Outlander saw the largest declines, falling by 30% and 72% compared to the same period in 2024.

The Outlander, in particular, has not recorded any sales since September. Mitsubishi Vietnam plans to replace the Outlander with the entirely new Destinator model, set to launch in early December.

In the year-end sales race, the Mazda CX-5 has established a lead of over 3,300 units over its closest competitors, with just over a month left in 2025. Thus, the Japanese model is likely to claim its sixth consecutive year as the best-selling midsize SUV.

However, this lead has significantly narrowed compared to 2024, when the Mazda CX-5 outpaced the second-place Ford Territory by over 6,600 units. Coupled with the segment’s overall growth and the presence of an electric model in the top ranks, the midsize SUV segment in Vietnam is becoming more dynamic and competitive.
