Vietnam Faces Shortage of 27,000 Semiconductor Engineers

The global semiconductor industry is experiencing a rapid surge in demand for skilled professionals, presenting Vietnam with a unique opportunity to establish itself as a key player in this high-tech sector. However, this growth also brings significant challenges, particularly in training and preparing a robust workforce of engineers to meet the industry's evolving needs.

At the seminar “Enhancing Collaboration to Advance Semiconductor Training and Research,” hosted by Hanoi National University, experts highlighted the critical shortage of skilled labor as the semiconductor industry’s most pressing global challenge. However, this gap presents a unique opportunity for Vietnam to deepen its integration into the global supply chain.

Mr. Wan Azmi Bin Wan Hussin, CEO of CT Semiconductor, noted that regions worldwide, particularly Asia, face a significant talent deficit, with Asia alone needing approximately 450,000 high-skilled semiconductor professionals. Vietnam is no exception, as the industry’s rapid growth outpaces its training capabilities.

According to Mr. Hussin, fresh graduates typically require at least six months to adapt to real-world production lines. During the construction of a facility in Vietnam, the company relied on Korean experts due to the local shortage of engineers.

Currently, Vietnam has around 15,000 semiconductor professionals, aiming to reach 50,000 by 2030. The packaging sector alone requires 35,000 engineers, but only 8,000 are available, leaving a gap of 27,000 within the next five years.

Experts emphasize that the demand for semiconductor talent is outpacing training capacity, as Vietnam strives to become a regional manufacturing hub.

Ms. VÅ© Kim Chi, Market Development Director at Mitsubishi Research Institute, believes this is an opportune moment for Vietnam to adopt a hybrid training model, catering to both domestic needs and international labor markets. The institute proposes a tripartite collaboration involving universities, businesses, and training intermediaries to bridge the supply-demand gap.

Mr. Kenneth Tse, General Director of Intel Products Vietnam, echoed the importance of this three-way partnership. He suggested that placing students directly on production lines is the most effective way to gain practical experience, while advocating for mutually beneficial cooperation mechanisms to engage both businesses and educational institutions.

Mr. Phạm Bảo SÆ¡n, Vice Director of Hanoi National University, announced the university’s investment in research infrastructure and specialized training programs, including the development of a National Integrated Circuit Design, Manufacturing, and Testing Center. The university aims to train 10,000 semiconductor experts by 2030, aligning with Vietnam’s industry development strategy.

Experts warn that the pace of semiconductor workforce development lags behind global demand. To seize this opportunity, Vietnam must strengthen international partnerships, standardize training programs, and integrate students into production environments earlier.
