On December 1st, Mr. Ho Van Mung, Chairman of the People’s Committee of An Giang Province, held a meeting with An Giang Power Company and the Phu Quoc Special Administrative-Economic Zone authorities. The purpose was to discuss solutions and update progress on resolving the undersea cable rupture that caused a power outage in Phu Quoc since the afternoon of November 29th.

According to An Giang Power Company, restoring the undersea cable to its original state could take up to two months. The fastest temporary solution is to lay a surface cable from Ha Tien station to the fault location, remove the damaged cable section, and reconnect it. This process is expected to take approximately 10 days.

The prolonged power outage has disrupted production, business, and daily life for residents in the Phu Quoc Special Administrative-Economic Zone over the past few days.

To provide temporary power to residents and businesses on the island, Southern Power Corporation mobilized 12 generators from various provinces in the region, with a total capacity of 2.3 MW, which were delivered to Phu Quoc on December 1st.

However, 525 specialized substations belonging to businesses have yet to be reconnected to the grid. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of residential customers on Phu Quoc Island are experiencing rolling blackouts due to insufficient power supply to meet demand.

For areas heavily impacted by the consecutive two-day power outage, the Chairman of An Giang Province’s People’s Committee instructed the Department of Industry and Trade to collaborate with An Giang Power Company and Phu Quoc authorities. They are to develop a temporary plan to ensure 24/7 power supply to residents immediately. Additionally, proactive measures must be taken to prevent further disruptions to production, business, and Phu Quoc’s tourism environment.

The cause of the 110kV Ha Tien – Phu Quoc undersea cable rupture has been identified by the power sector and local authorities as resulting from pile-driving work for a coastal road project in Ha Tien. The Chairman of An Giang Province’s People’s Committee directed the Department of Construction to require the construction unit to clarify responsibility.
