Exclusive Look: Hanoi’s Ambitious 24.6 Trillion VND Underground Tunnel Project Across the Red River

The groundbreaking road tunnel project commences at the intersection of Lĩnh Nam and Nguyễn Khoái streets in Lĩnh Nam Ward, extending to the Lý Thánh Tông - Giáp Hải junction in Bát Tràng Commune. With a total investment of 24,604 billion VND, this ambitious endeavor promises to revolutionize transportation infrastructure in the region.

In the upcoming phase of transportation infrastructure development, Hanoi is exploring a plan to invest in an underground road tunnel crossing the Red River from the south, with construction expected to begin in 2026. The tunnel will start at the intersection of Linh Nam and Nguyen Khoai streets (Linh Nam Ward) and end at the intersection of Ly Thanh Tong and Giap Hai streets (Bat Trang Commune), with a total investment of approximately VND 24.604 trillion.

According to the proposed plan, the entire tunnel route will be approximately 6 km long, with the main river-crossing section spanning about 3.65 km.

The project is designed to include two parallel tunnels, each with a diameter of up to 15.2 meters, arranged in two layers to accommodate high traffic volumes and ensure long-term operational safety.

With a cross-sectional width of approximately 40 meters, this is considered a large-scale underground transportation project, requiring complex technical and construction organization.

The starting point of the tunnel at the intersection of Linh Nam and Nguyen Khoai streets (Linh Nam Ward) is deemed suitable within the overall southern transportation network of the capital. This area directly connects to riverside roads and ring roads, where vehicle density is increasingly high.

Once completed, the tunnel will provide an additional route across the Red River, helping to alleviate pressure on existing bridges.

From Linh Nam Ward, the tunnel will cross the Red River to connect to the eastern side, ending at the intersection of Ly Thanh Tong and Giap Hai streets in Bat Trang Commune. This area is part of Hanoi’s expanded development space and offers ample land resources.

Notably, the section passing through Bat Trang Commune is primarily agricultural land, facilitating land clearance and construction processes.

At the connection point with Ly Thanh Tong Street, the tunnel is expected to pass through a residential area. However, the impact is considered minimal, affecting only a few households.

Upon completion, the tunnel will offer an additional travel option alongside existing bridges such as Vinh Tuy, Thanh Tri, and Chuong Duong, contributing to traffic flow optimization, congestion reduction, and enhanced network capacity.

With a total investment of approximately VND 24.6 trillion, the Red River underground road tunnel project is expected to become a key highlight in Hanoi’s transportation infrastructure planning for the upcoming phase. Beyond addressing immediate traffic challenges, the project will unlock new development opportunities for areas on both sides of the Red River, aiming for a modern, interconnected, and sustainably developed capital.
