The People’s Court of Quang Ninh Province has sentenced Bui Thi Nhan to 22 years in prison for fraudulently appropriating over 31 billion VND and engaging in online gambling.

Defendant Bui Thi Nhan at the trial

According to the indictment by the Quang Ninh Provincial People’s Procuracy, from January 2023 to September 2024, driven by personal spending needs and a desire to fund online gambling, Bui Thi Nhan (born in 1990, residing in Mong Cai 1 Ward and Quang Ha Commune, Quang Ninh) employed various fraudulent schemes to embezzle money from multiple residents in the area.

The defendant fabricated a relationship with a leader of a commercial bank’s Mong Cai branch, claiming to need funds for “bank loan renewal” for clients, and promised high profits to attract investments.

To gain trust, Nhan created a fake Zalo account under the name “Duc Cuong,” posing as a bank employee to communicate with the victims.

Using this scheme, Bui Thi Nhan defrauded three victims—Ms. D.T.H. (26 billion VND), Ms. P.T.N. (1.81 billion VND), and Ms. P.T.Hi. (3.8 billion VND)—totaling 31.61 billion VND.

She used the embezzled funds to pay contributors, cover personal expenses, and gamble online.

The investigation revealed that from January 5, 2023, to September 13, 2024, Bui Thi Nhan made 1,106 deposits into her gambling account on the Kubet platform, totaling 65.69 billion VND, and received 23.97 billion VND in returns from the gambling system.

During the trial, the defendant confessed to her crimes. The judges determined that her actions were particularly severe, involving sophisticated schemes, large-scale embezzlement, and prolonged gambling, which caused public outrage.

At the conclusion of the trial, the court sentenced Bui Thi Nhan to 18 years in prison for “Fraudulent Appropriation of Property” and 4 years for “Gambling.” The total sentence she must serve is 22 years in prison.
