The only bank that can “challenge” Big 4 profits right now

On the evening of January 30th, a total of 27 banks registered for trading/listing on the stock exchange have completed the release of their financial reports for the fourth quarter of 2023. The business performance of the banks in 2023 has brought about many surprises.

In terms of profitability, the top 5 banks in the past years are Vietcombank, BIDV, MB, Agribank, and VietinBank.

Among them, Vietcombank is still the industry leader and far ahead of other banks in the system. According to the financial report, Vietcombank’s pre-tax profit in 2023 reached 41,244 billion VND, an increase of 10% compared to 2022, completing the business plan.

Notably, the remaining 4 banks have similar profits. Specifically, BIDV reported a pre-tax profit of 27,650 billion VND, MB achieved 26,306 billion VND, VietinBank reached 25,100 billion VND, and Agribank estimated to reach 25,400 billion VND.

This is also the first year that MB has entered the top 3 in terms of industry-wide profit, not only surpassing VietinBank and Agribank but also being far ahead of major joint stock banks such as Techcombank (22,888 billion VND), ACB (20,068 billion VND), VPBank (10,987 billion VND),…

These top 5 banks all recorded positive profit growth and completed their business plans. Among them, BIDV had the highest growth rate (21%).

Meanwhile, the two major private banks, Techcombank and VPBank, both experienced negative growth. Techcombank’s pre-tax profit in 2023 was 22,888 billion VND, a decrease of 10% compared to 2022. VPBank’s profit in 2023 was reduced by nearly half compared to 2022, with a profit of only 10,987 billion VND.

The top 10 profits in 2023 are named: Vietcombank, BIDV, MB, Agribank, VietinBank, Techcombank, ACB, HDBank, VPBank, VIB. The top 7 banks all have profits above 20,000 billion VND.

Compared to 2022, the faces in the Top are still familiar banks. However, there have been some changes in rankings. Due to negative profit growth, Techcombank dropped from second place to sixth place. VPBank also dropped from 6th place to 9th place.

HDBank recorded its highest profit ever, surpassing 13,000 billion VND, jumping from the Top 10 to the Top 8.

ACB reached a milestone of 20,000 billion VND in profit for the first time, ranking 7th, one step higher than in 2022.
