Planning until 2030, the whole province of An Giang has 27 urban areas, including 1 type 1 urban area; 1 type 2 urban area; 2 type 3 urban areas; 12 type 4 urban areas and 11 type 5 urban areas. Among them, strive to make Tan Chau town become a city under the province by 2030.
By 2030, the target of An Giang is to become a developed province in the Mekong Delta region, with a dynamic, harmonious and sustainable economy; a center for research and development of high-tech agriculture, aquaculture, and pharmaceutical application; an eco-tourism center of the region.
To achieve this goal, An Giang province sets 3 groups of goals for the economy, society, and environment, with 13 specific targets, including economic targets with an average annual growth rate of total production value (GRDP) of 7%; GRDP per capita (current price) reaching over 157 million VND/year; digital economy accounting for over 20% of GRDP.
The breakthroughs for development include: Building and promulgating policies and mechanisms to attract resources, domestic and foreign investors in breakthrough areas such as high-tech agriculture, food processing industry, services, tourism, logistics, and digital transformation.
Maximizing the mobilization of resources to invest in the construction of synchronous and modern infrastructure, especially transportation infrastructure, and promoting investment in the development of economic corridors, with a focus on the Chau Doc – Long Xuyen economic corridor; the Tinh Bien – Chau Doc – An Phu – Tan Chau border economic corridor (An Giang provincial border economic zone), industrial zones, and dynamic urban areas; high-quality commercial and service infrastructure network.
Strengthening administrative reform, with a focus on administrative procedure reform and improving the investment and business environment; applying science, technology, and digital transformation; simultaneously developing high-quality human resources, attracting training, employment, and rewarding talents to meet the province’s rapid and sustainable development demand.

Meanwhile, in accordance with Decision 1762/QD-TTg approving the province’s development plan for the period 2021 – 2030, with a vision to 2050, Tien Giang province will have additional cities of Go Cong and Cai Lay. The decision states the general target for Tien Giang by 2030 is to become a basically industrialized province, with a comprehensive and modern infrastructure system, dynamic areas, economic hubs in industry, tourism, maritime economy, and urban areas. The province plays an important connecting role between the Mekong Delta region, Ho Chi Minh City, and the Southeast region.
In terms of spatial organization, the plan identifies three economic – social areas of the province; accompanying the development of economic – social infrastructure along four important economic corridors of the province according to national transport routes through the province’s territory, ensuring efficient connection of the province’s infrastructure systems with the region and the country.
Regarding the development plan for urban systems, develop a harmonious and appropriate urban system, in line with the potential, advantages, geographical position, and culture of each urban area, and effectively use land resources.
By 2030, Tien Giang province aims to have 25 urban areas, including 1 type I urban area (My Tho city), 2 type III urban areas (Go Cong city and Cai Lay city), 8 type IV urban areas (My Phuoc, Cai Be, An Huu, Cho Gao, Tan Hiep, Vinh Binh, Tan Hoa, and Tam Lang). 14 type V urban areas, including 2 newly constructed urban areas, Phu Thanh and Tan Dien. Chau Thanh district achieves some criteria of a town.
