Expensive Seafood, Surprising Reversal in Egg and Meat Prices

Numerous businesses in HCMC have announced significant discounts of up to 30% on various items such as eggs and poultry in the days leading up to Tet. Meanwhile, seafood consumption has been noted to be strong, with prices seeing a slight increase but nothing significant.

On February 7 (Lunar December 28), chicken eggs and duck eggs are abundant at supermarket shelves with deep discounts.

Chicken eggs are reduced from 3,350 VND/egg to about 3,000 VND/egg, even lower depending on the location.

Supermarkets are filled with fresh seafood to serve customers during the days leading up to Tet.

Seafood is also heavily consumed during the Tet period. Ms. Minh Thuy, a seafood trader at Binh Dien wholesale market, said: “Currently, the volume of seafood coming to the market has doubled compared to normal days, in which the most in-demand are shrimp, squid, octopus, and various types of shellfish. The prices have increased slightly by about 10% due to transportation costs and the hiring of human resources during Tet”.

Currently, the quantity of goods imported to wholesale markets has almost doubled compared to normal days.

A survey of the prices of some seafood products in many traditional markets: Type 1 tiger prawn ranges from 400,000 – 450,000 VND/kg, Type 1 mantis shrimp is 250,000 – 300,000 VND/kg, Cà Mau crab ranges from 400,000 – 600,000 VND/kg, seaweed squid is 250,000 – 300,000 VND/kg, tube squid is 200,000 – 250,000 VND/kg, snakehead fish is 80,000 – 120,000 VND/kg…

According to traders, seafood products are being heavily consumed due to Tet, and many families are “avoiding boredom” by choosing seafood for Tet dishes. Another reason is that many restaurants, eateries, and traders are buying large quantities to store and sell again from the second day of Tet.

A representative from a seafood system mentioned that many imported items such as Norwegian king crab, Australian lobster, and Korean abalone are favored by customers as Tet gifts and for end-of-year parties. In addition, local seafood products that are popular among customers, such as blue mussels (Type 1) and Cà Mau crabs (wireless), and large-sized shrimp (4 pieces/kg), are also in high demand. The prices have increased slightly but not significantly.
