According to folk belief, buying clay pigs is to save money and wish for a warm and wealthy life in the future.
At the stalls, clay pigs are displayed with various sizes, shapes, and varieties.
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Xuan (a vendor selling clay pigs): “The clay pig products are in high demand, especially during the first days of the new year and the days approaching the God of Wealth’s day. Many people have the habit of buying clay pigs for their children to give lucky money after Tet. Families who focus on feng shui also want to buy a clay pig to keep at home in a safe or a cabinet for good luck.”
The most popular type of clay pig is the golden pig.
“Currently, the most expensive type is the porcelain pig, which costs 1.5 million VND, while the largest clay pig is priced at around 300,000 VND,” said Ms. Xuan.
Many young people also come to buy clay pigs during these days.
A vendor at Lang Ha market said: “The number of customers increases according to the time. At the beginning of the year, there are more buyers, on average I sell dozens of clay pigs each day, and some days even hundreds. Especially on the God of Wealth’s day (February 10), the sales volume can double.”
