Saigon Implements Construction of Metro Line 2: Ben Thanh – Tham Luong

On the morning of February 17th, the Urban Railway Management Board of Ho Chi Minh City held a ceremony to kick off the construction of the year for the Metro Line 2 project (Ben Thanh - Tham Luong) at the Ben Thanh Central Station in District 1.

The construction project of Ho Chi Minh City Metro Line 2 (Ben Thanh – Tham Luong) was approved by the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee in Decision No. 4474 in 2010 and adjusted in Decision No. 4880 in 2019 with a total investment of about 47,900 billion VND, using ODA funds from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Reconstruction Bank of Germany (KfW), the European Investment Bank (EIB), and counterpart funds from the budget.

With a length of over 11 km (including a more than 9 km underground section and a nearly 2 km elevated section) and 10 stations (9 underground and 1 elevated), the project traverses 6 districts: Districts 1, 3, 10, 12, Tan Binh, and Tan Phu, with a total area of 251,136 m2 for land reclamation; total compensation and support budget of over 3,753 billion VND. So far, the rate of land handover has reached 86.69% (508/586 cases).

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Bui Anh Huan, Deputy Head of the Urban Railway Administration of Ho Chi Minh City, urged contractors to mobilize workers and machinery for construction.

At the same time, he requested that the drainage contractor lead the coordination with water and electricity contractors to implement the construction work immediately after the ceremony to ensure the agreed progress between the parties, and basically complete the relocation of technical infrastructure in 2024 to prepare for handover to the main contractor for tunnel construction and station construction in 2025.

In addition to ensuring the construction progress, the Deputy Head of the Urban Railway Administration of Ho Chi Minh City also requested the contractors to pay attention to labor safety management and environmental hygiene during the construction process.

Prior to this, on June 22, 2023, the Urban Railway Administration of Ho Chi Minh City organized a groundbreaking ceremony for technical infrastructure works for the electrical category. So far, the selection of contractors for relocation and reinstatement of water supply, drainage, lighting, signage, and traffic signal systems has been completed.
