Urgent Implementation of Chu Lai Port Expansion and Upgrading Project in Quang Nam

The province of Quang Nam has received the proposal from a business to implement the project of expanding and upgrading Chu Lai Port in Tam Hiep Port Area, with a total investment capital of nearly 1,589 billion VND.

The Management Board of Quang Nam Economic Zones and Industrial Parks has announced that it has received valid documents from Chu Lai International Port Company Limited proposing the implementation of the project to expand and upgrade Chu Lai Port at Tam Hiep Port Area (Tam Hiep commune, Nui Thanh district), Quang Nam province.

Accordingly, the project scale is expanded on the land area for port construction of 1.72 hectares; upgrading Chu Lai port in Tam Hiep Port Area for 50,000DWT ships. The land use demand of the project is within the scope of 5.48 hectares registered in the 2023 Land Use Plan of Nui Thanh district approved by the provincial People’s Committee in Decision No. 1354/QDUBND dated July 3, 2023. The current status of this area is water surface, managed by the state and not used by any households or individuals.

The expanded and upgraded Chu Lai port project has a total investment capital of over 1,589 billion VND; the project implementation schedule is in 2024 and 2025. The project’s operational period is 70 years…

The expansion and upgrading of Chu Lai port is implemented in accordance with the planning regulations in the Decision approving the Overall Plan for the Development of Vietnam’s Seaport System for the period 2021-2030, vision to 2050. Accordingly, Chu Lai port (belonging to Truong Hai International Freight Forwarding and Transportation Company) is one of 15 seaports in the country planned from type 2 seaport (local comprehensive port) to type 1 seaport (national port, regional gateway) in the coming years.

The goal of the project according to the Plan is to develop Chu Lai seaport system into one of the transportation and trading hubs for domestic and international purposes in the Central Highlands and Central regions; serving as the gateway to the East Sea for the Central Highlands region, Southern Laos, Northeast Cambodia, and Thailand.

To develop Chu Lai port commensurate with the scale, cargo output of a type 1 seaport, Quang Nam provincial People’s Committee has approved the preliminary task statement and survey estimate, the development plan for Chu Lai seaport towards 2030.

The entire Chu Lai port area covers an area of 140 hectares; it is a major project in the field of logistics in the Central region, contributing to completing the supply chain of integrated services, as well as solving the transportation and shipping problems, attracting investors to Chu Lai open economic zone.

Chu Lai port is the only large-scale river port in the Central region, with the advantages of being a wind-protected port, having a favorable geographical position, located on the Truong Giang River, about 80 km from Da Nang city, nearly 30 km from Dung Quat Economic Zone (Quang Ngai), 40 km from VSIP Industrial Park (Quang Ngai), 3 km from Bac Chu Lai Industrial Park and THACO Chu Lai Industrial Park, 20 km from Tam Thang Industrial Park (Tam Ky), connected to National Highway 1A (2 km) and Da Nang – Quang Ngai Expressway (4 km)…. in the area with a convenient transportation system, railway stations, and international airports.

This is a general cargo port built according to international standards with a combined coast structure, using advanced Larsen sheet pile technology that is popular in countries around the world such as Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore… The port has a capacity of 3 million tons/year, a 500m-long wharf, and the ability to simultaneously receive 3 ships with a tonnage of up to 30,000 tons. This is a comprehensive port that can exploit a variety of cargo types such as container cargo, bulk cargo, oversized and overweight cargo, liquid cargo, gas…

Chu Lai port plays an important role in the operation of Chu Lai Logistics, it is the destination of many large shipping lines in the world such as SITC (South Korea), APL (Japan), COSCO (China), ZIM (Israel)…. Besides domestic transport routes, Chu Lai port also operates international routes from Chu Lai economic zone to major ports in China, South Korea, Japan, India, and vice versa.
