The main contents of the planning task include surveying, investigating, and collecting the necessary data for planning. At the same time, review the approved planning, study planning, arrange facilities to meet future exploitation needs, in line with the overall planning of the development of the national airport system in the period 2021-2030, vision to 2050 approved by authorized agencies. Determine the nature, role, scale of the port, as well as basic land indicators for the planning period and technical infrastructure. Identify environmental protection requirements and other requirements consistent with the port’s development goals.
The planning viewpoint is to maximize the efficiency of the existing infrastructure of Ca Mau airport to meet transportation needs, rationally integrate with other transportation methods; closely combine with ensuring national defense – security, safe exploitation.
In addition, the planning ensures the uniformity, consistency between the planning of Ca Mau airport and the overall planning for the development of the national airport system in the period 2021-2030, vision to 2050 and other related planning.
However, it must comply with national standards for civil aviation, military airport standards, and the standards and recommendations of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), consistent with the development trends in technology, materials, management, exploitation, environmental pollution control, climate change adaptation. Ensure national defense, security, safe exploitation; ensure the harmony of national, regional, local interests; the interests between the State, investors, and the people. Ensure the feasibility of the planning, in line with the resources for implementation.
The Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam coordinates with the Cà Mau Provincial People’s Committee and the relevant agencies and units in the process of organizing planning, guiding construction, and improving the sponsored products; responsible for receiving the sponsored products as planning documents; responsible for implementing the tasks of the planning agency after receiving the products, submitting them to the Ministry of Transport for appraisal and approval as prescribed.

Ca Mau airport is currently a 4C airport, operating only one flight route, Ca Mau – Ho Chi Minh City and vice versa, with a frequency of 4 flights per week using ATR72 aircraft.
According to the Decision approving the overall planning of Ca Mau airport for the 2015-2025 period of the Ministry of Transport, Ca Mau airport will be a 4C airport, constructing a new take-off and landing runway of 2,400m x 45m, ensuring the operation of A320/321 aircraft and equivalent to the number of aircraft received at peak hours is 4; the number of passengers received is 300,000 passengers per year, and the number of passengers at peak hours is 300 passengers per peak hour.
According to the decision approving the overall planning for the development of the national airport system, airports nationwide for the period 2021-2030 issued by the Prime Minister on June 07, 2023, Ca Mau airport is a 4C airport, capacity of 1 million passengers per year.
