Tightened Security at the Trial of Van Thinh Phat

From 5 a.m., the security in the vicinity of the People's Court of Ho Chi Minh City has been tightened.

This morning (5-3), the People’s Court of Ho Chi Minh City opened a trial against defendant Truong My Lan (born in 1956; Chairman of Van Thinh Phat Group) and her husband Chu Lap Co and 84 accomplices in a case involving Van Thinh Phat Group, Saigon Commercial Bank (SCB), and related companies, organizations (referred to as the Van Thinh Phat case).

Since early morning on March 5, the area around the People’s Court of Ho Chi Minh City has been tightly secured, ensuring traffic safety and order.

On the streets surrounding the court such as Nam Ky Khoi Nghia, Nguyen Du, Nguyen Trung Truc, Ly Tu Trong, many security forces are present, including traffic police, mobile police, and local police. Journalists covering the trial must comply with strict regulations to ensure absolute safety during the proceedings.

The 86 defendants in the case were charged with embezzlement, bribery, abuse of power while performing official duties, serious irresponsibility causing grave consequences, violation of regulations on banking activities, and giving bribes.

The authorities have determined that defendant Truong My Lan misappropriated over 304,000 trillion VND and caused damages amounting to over 129,000 trillion VND (the interest generated from the misappropriated principal).

The trial is expected to conclude on April 29, with presiding judge Pham Luong Toan, Chief Judge of the Criminal Division of the People’s Court of Ho Chi Minh City. The Supreme People’s Procuracy has appointed 10 prosecutors from the Supreme People’s Procuracy and the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Procuracy to act as public prosecutors.
