The project to build the Phu Quoc International Passenger Port was approved by the Chairman of the People’s Committee of Kien Giang province in March 2015, and then one month later the project started with a total investment of over 1,644 billion VND; of which 30% is invested by BOT investors, and 70% is from the local budget. The project implementation period is from 2015 to 2025, with an accumulated investment of 1,069 billion VND, reaching 80.3% of the project’s volume.
The Phu Quoc International Passenger Port project, when put into operation, has the capacity to accommodate passenger ships with a tonnage of up to 225,000 GT, carrying capacity of 5,000-6,000 passengers and cargo ships from the front; the back of the dock can accommodate smaller passenger ships or container ships, general cargo ships with a tonnage of 20,000 DWT.
Currently, this project has only implemented items such as: 120m main bridge pier, 850m wave barrier, buoy system, terminals, yards, port access road, lighting system… technical infrastructure and implementation costs… Many work items have not been implemented such as: terminals, yards, port access road, buoy system and dredging of maritime channels, land clearance work.
The leaders of Phu Quoc City People’s Committee said that this project currently faces many difficulties in the completion drawing review work of the wave barrier item; a part of the quantity of the lighting system, water supply located on the construction site is still slow; fire fighting system…
The Phu Quoc City People’s Committee proposed the provincial People’s Committee to allocate capital to continue implementing and completing the project.
The Phu Quoc City People’s Committee said it has proposed the Kien Giang Provincial People’s Committee to consider assigning the Department of Transport as the specialized managing agency for reviewing the design, construction drawing and estimate of the remaining items of the project. The Department of Planning and Investment supports in the work of submitting the authority approval decision to adjust the investment policy, approve the adjustment supplement plan for the selection of contractors for consultancy, construction, insurance… of the buoy and dredging channel items and power supply station, water supply. The Phu Quoc International Passenger Port project is an important and key project of the locality. To have the project put into operation soon, the Chairman of the Kien Giang Provincial People’s Committee – Lam Minh Thanh – assigned Mr. Le Quoc Anh – Deputy Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee – to directly handle the difficulties of the project, accelerate the progress, ensure the construction meet the requirements and schedule.
“Do not let the situation where there is a port but passengers have to transfer by small boats into the port as currently it is affecting the tourism image of Phu Quoc.
