This afternoon (7-3), the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Court continued to examine Truong My Lan (former chairman of Van Thinh Phat Group) and 85 other defendants regarding the wrongdoings at Van Thinh Phat Group, Saigon Commercial Bank (SCB), and related organizations.

The Panel of Judges (POJ) provides maximum conditions for defendants to rectify the consequences.
After the recess, the POJ announced that they had received a document from the defense lawyer of defendant Chu Lap Co (Chu Nap Kee Eric, husband of Truong My Lan) regarding Co’s authorization for their daughter to handle external debtor issues and rectify the consequences, if any.
According to the POJ, as explained in the morning, they will create maximum conditions for the defendants in the case, including Chu Lap Co, to rectify the consequences. In the petition, Co needs to provide a specific list, not general statements.
In this case, Chu Lap Co is accused of abusing their position and authority as Chairman of the Board of Times Square Company to assist their wife, Truong My Lan, in embezzling and causing significant damages to SCB.
Chu Lap Co signed Minutes of the General Meeting of Shareholders, decisions of the General Meeting of Shareholders, Minutes of the Board of Directors’ Meeting, etc. of Times Square Company to pledge the assets of Times Square Company as collateral for 73 loans, causing damages of more than 9.116 trillion VND to SCB.

Prior to that, during the morning questioning session on the same day (7-3), the defense lawyer of Lan also submitted a petition stating that Lan was currently detained and there are individuals holding Lan’s assets, so Lan’s child and grandchild express the desire to recover the assets on behalf of Lan to rectify the consequences of the case.
The POJ also stated that they will provide maximum conditions for all defendants to pay restitution.
The role of former Chairman of SCB’s Board of Directors, Dinh Van Thanh
The indictment accuses defendant Dinh Van Thanh, when serving as Chairman of SCB’s Board of Directors, of actively supporting Truong My Lan in creating false loan application records, and withdrawing money from SCB, causing significant damages. Dinh Van Thanh signed 479 loan documents, resulting in damages of 141 trillion VND to SCB.
The POJ also questioned former leaders, employees of SCB and its branches, including Truong Khanh Hoang (former Deputy General Director), Bui Nhan (former Deputy General Director), Diep Bao Chau (former Deputy General Director of SCB), Do Phu Huy (former Chairman of the Business and Investment Committee), Khong Minh The (former Head of Bank Review Department), Tran Hoang Giang (former Deputy Director of Credit Approval Division), Tu Van Tuan (former Director of Wholesale Customer Business Center), Mai Hong Chin (former Head of Bank Review Department), Mai Van Sau Nho (former Head of Bank Review Department), Luong Thi Hong Que (former Head of Corporate Credit Approval Department)…
These defendants all claimed to have followed instructions and only received salaries without any additional benefits from the bank…
