Prime Minister Urges Acceleration of Rạch Miễu 2 Bridge Construction; Urgent Funding Arrangements for Critical Coastal Dike in Place

On the evening of March 23, during his working visit to Tien Giang province, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh conducted a field survey to inspect the progress of several key projects in the province. These projects include the Rach Mieu 2 Bridge, the coastal embankment in Go Cong, the planning and construction of a seaport, and the restoration of the Go Cong coastal area.

Strive to complete Rach Mieu 2 Bridge on National Day 2025

Rach Mieu 2 is the second large-scale bridge spanning the Tien River, connecting Tien Giang and Ben Tre provinces; located about 4 km upstream from the existing Rach Mieu Bridge. The project starts at Dong Tam junction (intersection of National Highway 1 and provincial road 870), Tien Giang province; ends on National Road 60, near Ham Luong Bridge, Ben Tre province.

The project has a length of about 17.6 km, the bridge section is nearly 2 km long, 21.5 m wide, with 4 lanes, designed speed of 80 km/h. The total investment is 6,810.11 billion VND, started in March 2022 and expected to be completed in December 2025. The project is funded by the central budget, land clearance and resettlement work carried out by Tien Giang and Ben Tre provinces as investors and implementers.

During the inspection of Rach Mieu 2 Bridge project on February 15, 2023, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh directed to accelerate the construction progress, shorten the construction time to strive for early completion of Rach Mieu 2 Bridge, reducing traffic congestion on the already overloaded Rach Mieu 1 Bridge.

The Ministry of Transport is actively directing the investor and contractors to concentrate resources, machinery, and equipment and organize construction to strive to complete the Rach Mieu 2 Bridge project in accordance with the Prime Minister’s guidance.

Up to now, the land clearance work has achieved over 96%, the construction progress has reached over 41%, basically meeting the planned schedule. The relevant agencies strive to hand over all clean land by the first quarter of 2024; by the end of 2024, completion of 70% of the entire project and completion of the entire project in 2025.

The Prime Minister suggests that the investor, localities, and contractors continue to make greater efforts and responsibilities in implementing the project, ensuring progress, quality, safety, environmental sanitation, technology, aesthetics, anti-negative and waste; efficiently disburse public investment capital, contributing to promoting growth, creating jobs for people, and improving the transportation infrastructure of Ben Tre, Tien Giang provinces, the Mekong Delta region, and the whole country.

The Prime Minister requires leaders of localities with key infrastructure projects passing through to always pay attention, carry out well the land clearance work and encourage and promote the progress of the projects.

By now, the land clearance work has basically been completed, the procedures have also been completed, the Prime Minister suggested that the Project Management Board plan and strive to accelerate the progress within 3 months, complete by National Day on September 2, 2025, meeting the expectations of the people.

Allocate capital for the project to ensure the safety of the lives and assets of about 600,000 households

Previously, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh surveyed the Go Cong coastal embankment, with a total length of 21 km, of which over 6.8 km of wave-reducing levees have not been invested.

After listening to the reports and proposals of ministries, agencies, and Tien Giang province, the Prime Minister emphasized that this is a very important embankment route, investing nearly 7 km of wave-reducing levees is very necessary to prevent the increasingly serious situation of coastal erosion, ensure the safety of the lives and assets of about 600,000 households and the assets of the State, and protect nearly 54,000 ha of natural land, of which about 43,000 ha of agricultural land in 4 coastal districts and towns.

The Prime Minister assigned the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to coordinate with the Ministry of Planning and Investment to urgently allocate funding for this important project, including studying the use of reserves for 2024.

*Surveying the planned location for the construction of the seaport and the sea area recovery area of Go Cong, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh welcomes this idea of expanding the development space; requires Tien Giang province to coordinate with relevant sectors and agencies to develop specific plans and projects for submission to competent authorities for consideration.

The Prime Minister requires the construction of the seaport and the economic area to be consistent with the overall planning of the province, the Mekong Delta region, and the national seaport planning; study connectivity factors, transportation and logistics services with the region and the country; serve import and export of goods not only for Tien Giang province but also for the region. The Prime Minister noted that projects should be built, resources mobilized, and implemented in the form of public-private partnership.
