## Strive to Exceed the Construction Schedule

The Component 2 project – works serving air traffic management in the first phase of Long Thanh International Airport project, invested by Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM), started construction on September 29, 2022. The total investment capital for the entire project is nearly 3,500 billion VND from a mixed source of capital, including capital from Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation and domestic commercial loans.

This item has a total area of about 70,000m2. Of which, the main works is the air traffic control tower and auxiliary works with an area of 24,000m2, built to control operations in the aircraft movement area at the airport and flight operations in the airspace of the airport.

According to a representative of Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM), the contractors are committed to completing the Long Thanh air traffic control tower with a height of 123m ahead of schedule; so far, the project has completed concrete pouring to a height of 66.555m and is expected to be completed to a height of 84.705m before June 20. 

Mr. Ngo Tuan Anh, Director of Long Thanh Project Management Board, told Giao thong newspaper: “Currently, there are over 200 workers on the site of Component 2 project, and about 300 workers at peak times. Many tasks have to be done manually, relying on manpower.

In the past, the Board has been coordinating with the design contractor, construction contractor, and supervision consultant to focus resources and develop an appropriate construction organization plan. The Board also directs, urges contractors continuously and requires ensuring absolute safety for engineers, workers… on the construction site”.

“Brain” of Long Thanh Airport

The air traffic control tower at Long Thanh Airport is designed in the shape of a lotus bud, with colors and structure suitable for the terminal and neighboring buildings. The tower has a height of 123 meters and a base diameter of 10 meters. It has a control cabin with an area of 150 square meters, along with two control cabins in the apron area, each with an area of 70 square meters.

The air traffic control tower at Long Thanh Airport is known as the command “brain” of the airport. In addition to the 123-meter-high lotus tower, there are other auxiliary facilities such as the main and auxiliary radar stations, non-location-dependent VHF transmitting station; weather forecasting radar; multi-directional and distance measuring locator system; surveillance system from multiple points; automatic weather observation system; wind shear warning system; and communication, data systems between works to ensure safe flight operations; along with a medium-voltage power supply system for works supporting flight operations.

The equipment systems of the Air Traffic Control Tower are designed with the most modern automation technology available and are open-ended for future technology investment. Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation said this is the largest-scale infrastructure project with the most sophisticated technology that the unit has ever implemented.

The Long Thanh Airport project, phase 1, is a particularly important project of the National level, having a significant impact on the socio-economic development of Vietnam. The total investment capital of the project is about 336,630 billion VND (16 billion USD), of which 4% is for phase one.

After completing all phases, Long Thanh Airport is expected to reach a capacity of up to 100 million passengers per year and become the largest airport in Vietnam in the future.
